A benefit performance for Levantine Center, "a new paradigm for Middle
Eastern cultures and coexistence."
Bringing together diverse organizations under one roof, Levantine Center will
open in 2002 with a performance space, art gallery, conference room,
workshops, bookstore, cafe, and office space for a number of nonprofit
cultural organizations. Levantine Center will include Arab, Israeli,
Persian, Turkish, Armenian, Greek, Kurdish, and other cultures.
The Sephardi/Mizrahi Jewish cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle East
will be one of the center¡¯s unique features.
The June 23 concert is the first program to benefit the center. Beginning at
8 pm at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, 4401 W. 8th St., Los Angeles 90005, the
evening features the contemporary, classical and mystical dances of Shida
Pegahi's Ney Nava Dance Theatre, as well as a new flamenco/Middle
Eastern/jazz show, "El Azahar," created by Adam & Laila del Monte. Master
oudist John Bilizikjian brings Arab, Armenian and Kurdish influences to the
flamenco/jazz compositions by Adam del Monte and the new choreography from
Laila del Monte. Additional artists include Marisol Fuentes, Afaf del Monte
and Patric Oliver.
This program is organized by Open Tent Middle East Coalition, and cosponsored
