Western Kingbird at Grand Isle state park 2
LA birders Lisa Robichaux and I observed a Western Kingbird along with two Eastern kingbirds on the wires along the main road near the campground bath house this afternoon. Also had a nice flight of 20 Broad-winged Hawks flying in nearly single file from west to east. Jed Pitre Thibodaux

Feel free to keep the packs you plan to use on 22 October, and update afterward. *Filter Edits Temporarily Disabled ?* Filter editing and running have been disabled while we update and add new taxa. This functionality will be restored when the taxonomy update begins at approximately 9 AM Eastern on October 22. Please check your filters after the update to ensure everything is functioning correctly. *Updates Already Underway ?* Like last year, we're making significant changes to observations in advance of the taxonomy update. Changes being made include: 1) adding taxa to filters that will be split; 2) converting records to the subspecies that will later become a split species. We've already started converting many Herring Gull records worldwide to the correct subspecies (soon-to-be species!), and we'll be doing this for other taxa as well. If you notice records changing, don¡¯t be alarmed. However, if you see records flagging that should not be, please reach out to us so we can address any issues. Peveto Woods, Tuesday work day
Tuesday, Oct 15th 9:30 - Noon David Booth and I have scheduled a day for trail maintenance, trimming vines, cutting back vegetation, and cleaning benches and water features. I plan to get there around 9:30 and work until around noon. The mosquitoes and deer flies have been tolerable lately, but long sleeves and pants are recommended. I always bring a head net and have extras if the deer flies are a nuisance. I will be checking trail cams and changing out memory sticks if you wish to see the set up. Footwear that can handle briars and good gloves are also recommended. Loppers, trimmers, and hand clippers are good to bring. I will have bottled water, but bring prefered food and fluids. The birding has been good lately in the sanctuary and the weather should be nice. Call or text if you have questions. Thanks, Dave Patton Sanctuary Manager Peveto Woods 337 298-8447

Cormorants at Chicot SP 2
My wife and I were birding this morning(Tuesday, 10/8/24) at the south fishing pier in Chicot State Park and saw a large number of DCCOs feeding. My conservative estimate was approximately 200 birds. (eBird flagged this number). Most were juveniles. Later this afternoon, we saw what I assume is the same group flying north, low to the lake, from our cabin. I¡¯ve never seen this many DCCOs together before. Is this related to fall migration ? I have pictures which I will add to my eBird list when I get home Friday. Comments welcomed. Varied Thrush at Peveto, Sunday 2
I picked up the memory sticks today from the trail cams at Peveto Woods. I was looking at them tonight and found a Varied Thrush recorded on two of the cameras. The mister water feature and the new water feature next to it. The only recordings were from Sunday,10/6/24, at 3:30 PM. I was only there an hour today, but did not see it. Photos attached are stills from the videos. Dave Patton Lafayette

BRAS Program - Wed, Oct 30th @ EBR Parish Main Library
The Baton Rouge Audubon Society will host our next program on Wednesday, October 30th at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Blvd. PROGRAM TITLE: Secretive marshbird trends across the Deltaic Plain of Louisiana PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Secretive marshbirds (SMB) are an enigmatic group of waterbirds found within fresh to saline marshes of Louisiana and are affected by both natural and anthropogenic changes within their environment. The lack of information regarding SMB distributions complicates planning, management, and restoration of SMBs in coastal Louisiana, highlighted during the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in 2010. To address this information gap, we conducted three years of callback survey within five basins around Coastal Reference Monitoring Stations (CRMS) scattered across Louisiana wetlands of five key breeding SMBs across various coastal marsh types within the deltaic plain of Louisiana. Ecological variables such as water levels, vegetation community types and remote sensing results were then used to quantify ecological trends and estimate the abundance of SMBs. Additionally, deployment of GPS tags on rails and gallinules will help better identify what factors may affect home range size and movements across seasons. The development of species distribution models from abundance across southeastern Louisiana will help biologists better identify key restoration features for marshbird management and conservation. PRESENTER: Leah Moran, PhD candidate, School of Renewable Natural Resource, Louisiana State University LOCATION: East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Blvd; Room 102 (first floor) DATE: Wednesday, October 30th TIME: 7:00 - 8:00 PM (in-person social 6:30-7:00) Although we encourage everyone to attend in person, we do still offer a virtual option via Zoom. Important requests for LOS News
All, My previous request for bird book suggestions for Christmas has been going well. PLEASE send them to me if you haven¡¯t yet. So far, I have received zero titles by people like Jon Donn, Steve Howell, Geoff Hill, Donald Kroodsma, Ted Floyd, or even Roger Tory Peterson for that matter. So if you have some favorites from these folks or from anyone else, please send them to me ASAP. NEW REQUEST!! I¡¯d like to start congratulating LOS members on home parish, LA, NA, etc. life list achievements. Venice pelagic trip 19 Oct.
LABIRD ¡ª I¡¯m trying to fill another boat trip for Sat. Oct. 19. Pelagic trips this late are almost nonexistent so I have no idea what we¡¯ll find out there. An October trip out of Texas had a Manx Shearwater on 10 Oct. 2015, and one was found sick at Port Aransas last year on 26 Oct.. Those birds almost certainly passed through LA waters. So that¡¯s my current ¡°fantasy¡± bird. In second place is Red Phalarope, for which 3 of 4 of Louisiana¡¯s records are from October, and there is a fairly nice scattering of October records all over the eastern USA, including on a few Atlantic pelagic trips. Here are eBird Trip Lists from the two previous trips, August and September: https://ebird.org/tripreport/275147 https://ebird.org/tripreport/268123 If interested, let me know, Van Remsen =================== Dr. J.
