Tuesday, Oct 15th 9:30 - Noon David Booth and I have scheduled a day for trail maintenance, trimming vines, cutting back vegetation, and cleaning benches and water features. I plan to get there around 9:30 and work until around noon. The mosquitoes and deer flies have been tolerable lately, but long sleeves and pants are recommended. I always bring a head net and have extras if the deer flies are a nuisance. I will be checking trail cams and changing out memory sticks if you wish to see the set up. Footwear that can handle briars and good gloves are also recommended. Loppers, trimmers, and hand clippers are good to bring. I will have bottled water, but bring prefered food and fluids. My wife and I were birding this morning(Tuesday, 10/8/24) at the south fishing pier in Chicot State Park and saw a large number of DCCOs feeding. My conservative estimate was approximately 200 birds. (eBird flagged this number). Most were juveniles. Later this afternoon, we saw what I assume is the same group flying north, low to the lake, from our cabin. I’ve never seen this many DCCOs together before. Is this related to fall migration ? I have pictures which I will add to my eBird list when I get home Friday. Comments welcomed. The Baton Rouge Audubon Society will host our next program on Wednesday, October 30th at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Blvd. PROGRAM TITLE: Secretive marshbird trends across the Deltaic Plain of Louisiana PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Secretive marshbirds (SMB) are an enigmatic group of waterbirds found within fresh to saline marshes of Louisiana and are affected by both natural and anthropogenic changes within their environment. The lack of information regarding SMB distributions complicates planning, management, and restoration of SMBs in coastal Louisiana, highlighted during the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in 2010. To address this information gap, we conducted three years of callback survey within five basins around Coastal Reference Monitoring Stations (CRMS) scattered across Louisiana wetlands of five key breeding SMBs across various coastal marsh types within the deltaic plain of Louisiana. Ecological variables such as water levels, vegetation community types and remote sensing results were then used to quantify ecological trends and estimate the abundance of SMBs. Additionally, deployment of GPS tags on rails and gallinules will help better identify what factors may affect home range size and movements across seasons. The development of species distribution models from abundance across southeastern Louisiana will help biologists better identify key restoration features for marshbird management and conservation. LABIRD — I’m trying to fill another boat trip for Sat. Oct. 19. Pelagic trips this late are almost nonexistent so I have no idea what we’ll find out there. An October trip out of Texas had a Manx Shearwater on 10 Oct. 2015, and one was found sick at Port Aransas last year on 26 Oct.. Those birds almost certainly passed through LA waters. So that’s my current “fantasy” bird. In second place is Red Phalarope, for which 3 of 4 of Louisiana’s records are from October, and there is a fairly nice scattering of October records all over the eastern USA, including on a few Atlantic pelagic trips.
