Peveto Woods - Vol. work day 2
Volunteer Work Day - next Wednesday, 9/25/24 I spent yesterday in BRAS Peveto Woods Sanctuary getting a start on the cutting back of ragweed, lantana (butterflies were great), acacia, etc. from the road and trails. This summer has been perfect for the growth of vegetation. The road into the parking area is open now enough not to scratch up your car, and some of the trails are passable. They are all in need of mowing so watch your step. The rag weed is 10 feet tall and in bloom. Deer flies and mosquitoes are active but tolerable with a full bug suit. The heat and humidity were in full force. Birding was OK. I spent about an hour searching but mostly sitting at the water features. Warblers - Canada, Wilsons, B&W, N Waterthrush. A few pics from the bench on my list. https://ebird.org/checklist/S195713298 Now that you are forewarned - I will be going back next Wednesday for another round of road and trail maintenance. Hopefully no hurricane in the gulf. You are welcome to join me. Loppers, trimmers, and clippers are needed to work on branches and vines. Wear sturdy foot wear ( I wear rubber boots), dress for insects, and bring lots of water. I will work from about 9:00 to 12:00 with many breaks. Another work day will be coming in mid October when conditions will be more agreeable. Dave Patton BRAS Peveto Woods

Bald Eagle at Morganza Spillway 91824 4
Hi, all, I worked in downtown Baton Rouge this morning, so I took a ride to the Morganza Spillway to check it out. After driving over the bridge coming from the town of Morganza, I spotted an adult bald eagle on the manmade platform there. So hopefully, when his mate shows up, he will build a nest there! Also, as I traveled toward the Bonnet Carre spillway to and from Metairie, I noted that the 310 nest is in good shape after Francine, so hopefully, the eagles will return there. As I traveled from St. James Parish to St. John Parish in the evening along I-10, I did spot an adult bald eagle in the trees on the lake side of the interstate, and also, a pair of ducks flew over, though I was not able to identify the species. Looking forward to Fall birds! Happy birding! Terri Skelton

Winter Hummingbird Reporting
LAbird / HumNet, It's hard to believe that we're entering "wintering" hummingbird season for 2024-2025! In most years by now, the first Rufous or Buff-bellied Hummingbird have shown up, but I haven't heard of any sightings yet. Keep an eye out! You may be the lucky host. I will continue to accept reports of your wintering hummingbirds this season - please email me at Erik.Johnson AT Audubon.org to submit your observations with the following information: - Your name - Your address (town only is acceptable) - First observed (FO) date - Species - Age (Adult, immature, unknown) - Sex (Male, female, unknown) - Photos if available and/or whether banded, when and by whom. Please note that Ruby-throated Hummingbirds aren't counted as "wintering" except when present between November 15 and February 28. For all other species, I will accept reports from any date. I am also pleased to share the summary of the winter hummingbird season from 2023-24 below, as well as a By Parish summary attached. Please let me know if you have any corrections or additions.
