All A reminder that I'm splitting one of my areas into 2 smaller areas. If anyone is interested in starting a new team in a great area and count, please send me an email. The area starts on the south end of Erath La and cones down to the community of Henry, both in Vermilion Parish. It is a great rural area with wetlands, ag fields and woods. What a fun hummingbird season so far! We're up to a remarkable 6 BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS in the state so far. Also decent numbers of Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and it looks like Buff-bellied Hummingbird numbers are picking up over the last couple weeks.
Today is November 15 - which means if you have a Ruby-throated Hummingbird as of today, we count it as "wintering." (I track all other species regardless of date).
Please continue to report your winter hummer observations to me for recording in the LA Winter Hummingbird Database, providing the following information:

LA Winter Hummingbird Report #3
LAbird and HUMNET,
What a fun hummingbird season so far! We're up to a remarkable 6 BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS in the state so far. Also decent numbers of Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and it looks like Buff-bellied Hummingbird numbers are picking up over the last couple weeks.
Today is November 15 - which means if you have a Ruby-throated Hummingbird as of today, we count it as "wintering." (I track all other species regardless of date).
Please continue to report your winter hummer observations to me for recording in the LA Winter Hummingbird Database, providing the following information:
- Your name
- Your address (town only is acceptable)
- First observed (FO) date (or, if discovered while banding or marking other birds, the date it was observed)
- Species
- Age (Adult, immature, unknown)
- Sex (Male, female, unknown)
- Whether banded, when and by whom
- Send photos if available to confirm above details
Also, please report the last observed (LO) date, if possible, when the bird leaves.

LA Lit - First breeding evidence for Black Rail in Louisiana
LAbirders,
We're really excited to share that our research team working on Black Rails in Louisiana has confirmed breeding evidence of Black Rails in southwestern Louisiana, specifically by documenting broods of flightless chicks using trail cameras. The lead author of the paper, Lauren Monopoli, is a Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois who put the pieces together to figure this out. The Eastern Black Rail (the population east of the Rockies) was listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act in November 2020, so there is extra sensitivity around sharing locations of birds.

Our surveys for Black Rails and Yellow Rails are ongoing, thanks to new funding through the State Wildlife Grant program administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. energy development in Louisiana and an update on current offshore wind
projects.
PRESENTER: Robert Dobbs is the nongame avian ecologist for the Wildlife
Diversity Program, Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries, where he
works to identify the status and distributions, habitat associations, and
factors limiting populations of bird species of greatest conservation need,
and to facilitate management actions and research and monitoring programs
for their benefit. Rob is an avid birder in his free time, active in the
birding community, particularly through the Louisiana Ornithological
Society, and involved in numerous outreach efforts to engage the public in
birding and the value of Louisiana¡¯s avifauna.

The amazing Purple Martin has a unique and long-standing relationship with
humans which originated with Native Americans. The eastern population is
dependent upon humans to provide nesting sites in the form of Purple Martin
houses, condominiums and gourds. Join us for a feature-length film about
Purple Martins and migratory bird conservation. Part of this documentary
was filmed in Shreveport.
In the opening and closing comments we will discuss the legal battle that
two OAS members who live in Harahan, the Stamms, are having with a neighbor
who sees Purple Martins as nuisance animals and wants the Stamms to take
down their martin houses. The jurisdiction is the City of Harahan that has
proclaimed itself to be a ¡°Bird Sanctuary City¡± since 1959, yet Harahan¡¯s
leadership has hired a Special Magistrate to oversee the trial against the
Stamms and their Purple Martin residents.

Ahead of the next Louisiana Ornithological Society newsletter, the LOS Winter Meeting will be in Lafayette, January 24-26, 2025. Registration is available on the LOS website--. It is the old form PayPal registration, so you may have to place items in the cart, then backtrack to the dropdown menu to complete the transaction. Registration is $15, student registration is $5, and dinner is $25.
Lodging
LOS has reserved a block of rooms at the Homewood Suites by Hilton--Lafayette Airport, 201 Kaliste Saloom Road, in Lafayette, for $115.00/night, plus applicable state & local taxes. The room block will be held until Friday, January 3, 2025. Register by phone at 337-264-6044 and ask for the LOS rate. Even if you are a veteran of navigating the Hilton website, it is best to call the hotel directly. Sometimes you may do better through a loyalty program, AAA, AARP, or the like, but short of getting free rooms through the Hilton loyalty program, this really does appear to be a steal, so don't miss the deadline.
Events
All evening events during the Winter Meeting will be in the conference rooms at the Homewood Suites (no extra driving!).
Dinner
Dinner is $25.00/person and will only be available through pre-registration. Our Lafayette event committee has chosen Buffalo Catering to supply a dinner of catfish bites, chicken and sausage gumbo, potato salad, summer salads consisting of spring mix, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, feta cheese and purple onions, and a dessert of bread pudding, praline sauce and pecans. Drinks will be iced tea and water. If you desire a special diet meal, you are welcome to bring your own. You may also BYOB.
Deadline for dinner reservations is Friday, January 3. This is a catered affair, and unlike recent events where we have had gumbo or jambalaya and could adjust on the run, so to speak, you will not be able to buy dinner on site at the registration table, or the night of the dinner. Please heed the deadline.
A number of field trips are planned and information will be available shortly. Erik Johnson will speak Friday night on sparrows, and is rumored to be planning to band some on Saturday, and, following Jane Patterson's and Katherine Gividen's recent talk on birding abroad, Ken Eyster will speak Saturday night about his trip to Madagascar.

Late fall 2024 "Tyrannid-Palooza" in south LA
Dear Labird eBirders-
I'm putting out a general request to anyone involved in recent reports
of Western Flycatcher, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Tropical Kingbird, Couch's
Kingbird, Tropical/Couch's kingbird, or Cassin's Kingbird to please submit
reports to the Louisiana Bird Records Committee:
--All those species are on the LBRC review list.
--I'm the primary eBird reviewer for SE LA.
--Based on my initial review of the ID, for observations already including
media I will "Accept" but with a comment "pending LBRC review."
--If an observation indicates "Photo" or "recording," then I will typically
temporarily mark it as "Unconfirmed-awaiting media." I will convert those
to "Accept" as the media are added and the records move back to "Rereview"
status. If the media never appear, then the observation will remain as
unconfirmed. Reviewers may not have time to send reminders.....
--Many observations are being submitted as "continuing at location." I may
or may not accept those as "Known to be at location- pending LBRC review,"
but I'm reluctant to accept observations that post-date the last
observation with hard evidence. Some of those may have photos/audio to be
added but I have no way of knowing that if you don't say it in the details.
--It's easy to submit a report to the LBRC, and you can cross-reference to
your eBird list. The LBRC is not obligated to review EBird observations not
linked to a LBRC report. So, the best plan is for at least one observer
from each group to submit the record so that it is archived by the LBRC and
you get credit. You can summarize multiple dates of observation in one
report.

So, if you want to see which species are increasing or declining in Louisiana, for example, it¡¯s now easy to look up each one. St. Tammany parish has a Multi Modal Transportation plan, open for public
comment. Comments close TOMORROW 10/25. I'm going to make a few points
about it: It is not multi-modal, they only address cars (NO public
transportation whatsoever). They mention the trace, but nobody is going to
use their bicycle to ride from Slidell to Covington to go shopping, that is
strictly recreational use.
AMost important, they are going to carve up most of the forested and
wetland area between mandeville and slidell, for new "transportation"
modes. Anybody that lives here knows this is not where the congestion is.
So the only reason to add new roads here is to open up all of those areas
for subdivision developoment, simply becasue the land owners and
develoipers can make more money from new subdivisions instead of managed
forests. And WE will pay for these rodas for them.
This will not help traffic congestion one iota. There is a very scarce
mention of environmental, no mention of habit or wetland destruction They
even plan to bring Industrial RAIL back! (no light passenger rail to get
from one place to another, of course). Check out page 88-89 to see the
new green roads in these areas. I'm sure other areas of the praish are
affected as well, i just saw this yesterday and zoomed in on the middle
of the parish. Not to mention they want to put a service road through my
property next to my house.
I know this is late, please take a minute to read at least these few
pages, and send comments to MMTP@.... here are 2 links to the
plan..

LA Winter Hummingbird Report #2
LABIRD and HUMNET,
We're off to a pretty interesting start to the winter hummingbird season for 2024-25. Several western species have showed up a bit early, including THREE Broad-billed (all immature males). The predictions are for a warm and dry winter along the Gulf Coast as La Nina strengthens, which should make for a good year for Buff-bellied (according to some preliminary analyses I've put together), but that's not materializing yet. I'm super curious to see what happens over the next few weeks.
Please continue to report your winter hummer observations to me for recording in the LA Winter Hummingbird Database, providing the following information:
- Your name
- Your address (town only is acceptable)
- First observed (FO) date (or, if discovered while banding or marking other birds, the date it was observed)
- Species
- Age (Adult, immature, unknown)
- Sex (Male, female, unknown)
- Whether banded, when and by whom
- Send photos if available to confirm above details
Also, please report the last observed (LO) date, if possible, when the bird leaves.
Please also note that Ruby-throats don't count as "wintering" until after Nov 15, so only send reports of the other species for now.

COMMENTS DUE 10/25!!! ON St tammany's awful multi-modal transportaiton plan

St. Tammany and area birders....... This is Not exactly bird related, but
this impact birds and wildlife. Someone else may have mentioned it a while
back but it slipped my radar.
St. Tammany parish has a Multi Modal Transportation plan, open for public
comment. Comments close TOMORROW 10/25. I'm going to make a few points
about it: It is not multi-modal, they only address cars (NO public
transportation whatsoever). They mention the trace, but nobody is going to
use their bicycle to ride from Slidell to Covington to go shopping, that is
strictly recreational use.
AMost important, they are going to carve up most of the forested and
wetland area between mandeville and slidell, for new "transportation"
modes. Anybody that lives here knows this is not where the congestion is.
So the only reason to add new roads here is to open up all of those areas
for subdivision developoment, simply becasue the land owners and
develoipers can make more money from new subdivisions instead of managed
forests. And WE will pay for these rodas for them.
This will not help traffic congestion one iota. There is a very scarce
mention of environmental, no mention of habit or wetland destruction They
even plan to bring Industrial RAIL back! (no light passenger rail to get
from one place to another, of course). Check out page 88-89 to see the new
green roads in these areas. I'm sure other areas of the praish are affected
as well, i just saw this yesterday and zoomed in on the middle of the
parish. Not to mention they want to put a service road through my property
next to my house.
I know this is late, please take a minute to read at least these few pages,
and send comments to MMTP@.... here are 2 links to the plan..

LOS and the Cameron ferry
For those going to LOS, be advised that the ferry has been down at least
twice for weekends during the last month. On one of our trips we went down
the east side Saturday and birded, and when we started to go west, Melvin
and Robby informed us the ferry was down and would be down until Tuesday.
Two weeks later we were going down to spend the weekend. I checked Friday,
and the ferry was in operation. Saturday, after birding Willow I. and
Broussard Beach, we went to the ferry. The deckhand informed us it was
down, and she didn't know when it would be back up. Sunday morning I
called, and it was still down.
So, a word to the wise. It would be quite inconvenient to get caught on the
wrong side when you're trying to get to the meeting or your lodging. The
DOTD website has information on the ferries, and there is a 24 hour (?)
hotline for information: 1-888-613-3779.
