I purchased both units two months ago (early December). On both of my units, the color is a fairly dark gray -- not black, however the shades of gray don't match each other exactly.
If I have any complaint at all, it would be about a service issue. My LA-1K had the finals go out just seconds after powering the unit up for the first time.? After sending it in for warranty repair, Palstar called on the phone blaming me for causing the finals to die. The remark was, "I don't know what you did to cause this to happen."? They couldn't figure out why the finals died, so they seemed to think I caused it.? ?I had never driven the unit with more than 40 watts, and the SWR was well under 2:1 for the few seconds before the finals failed.? I had followed all precautions that were recommended by Palstar.? The bottom line is, the finals were defective, plain and simple.? That's why we have warranties to protect the consumer from these kind of defects. Why they wanted to blame me, a brand new customer, didn't seem to promote quality customer service, in my thinking. Anyway, they expected me to pay the return shipping, which I did because I wanted my amplifier back. So, if I question anything about Palstar, it would be the way they handled this warranty situation.??
If you decide to purchase either or both of these units, you'll have very high quality gear that will give you great service.
