Drawing rectangles
5
Hi all, simple question: How can I define a rectangle for the edge cut? With the rectangle tool I can draw quadrates by clicking at start and end point. A rectangle is shown when I drag from the start point, but I can¡¯t make it persistent (do I need to double click there? I tried.) Using inspect with the measure tool on the quadrat does not allow me to change dimensions to a rectabgle. This is 6.0.6 on macos 10.15.7 Axel --- PGP-Key: CDE74120 ? computing @ chaos claudius

Greetings all; New subscriber, here, but not new to electronics in general. I'm currently 87 yo, and 20 years retired. Mader the reaper blink first several times. I have and 8th grade education, but I am a Certified Electroncs Technician who spent the last 40 some years keeping a tv station on the air at several tv stations here in the US, last 18 years at the CBS affiliate in north central West Virginia. So the dirt under my fingernails is real from working on CNC machinery since I retired. I needed a high voltage op-amp to interface between a MAP sensor and the A/D range of a mesa electronics field input and found an analog devices ADA4497-1 in a tsop package, figured it would be ideal, but no one has stock in a tsop-6 package, so I finall told digikey to send me 3 of the ADA4499-1's, which are in a tsot-6 package, not much bigger than a grain of sand. Might be 2mm square including feet! I hear great things about kicad, and eagle has gone to the darkside and unreal licenses, so its out. I need to design a board to use this, so I downloaded/installed kicad-5.1.9 from debian-backports. And the first thing I look for is a tsot-6 footprint. No such thing. There may be one but I've no clue where apt installed it. So thats my first question: Does it have a tsot-6 footprint? If so, where do I find it? Thanks for any help. Take care and stay well everybody. Cheers, Gene Heskett. -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. suggest new feature: Arc-shaped Edge Plating
11
#pcb-manufacture
I want to add an Arc-shaped Plating Edge Pad to my PCB. I wonder if it is possible to do this in 6.0.x version. I know one can add Custom shape for SMD pad . and one can define round or oval drill, but I found no way to define and arc-shape drill route.

Delete Connection
5
Up to and including Kicad 5, EESchema had a menu option "Delete Connection", which allowed one to select a wire and delete it and all the connected wires not connected via a junction. This seems to have disappeared in Kicad 6, with the only alternative being to select the wire, press Alt-4, and then Del (or Delete from the menu). This creates additional work for something I do frequently (indeed more frequently than just deleting a single wire). Additionally, Alt-4 selects wires beyond a junction, which is often not what I want. Am I missing something, or do I need to raise the reinstatement of "Delete Connection" as a feature request? Bug/Feature with PCM
In getting several PCBnew plugins working under v6.0.5 I have found that after installing one from file if you go straight into PCBnew often the icon doesn't appear on it's toolbar. I always make sure I close PCBnew before I add a plugin. You cannot fix this by changing the "show icon" box in PCBnew's preferences - it makes no difference. However, if you close and restart KiCad completely it fixes the problem (assuming that the icon is enabled). Running under Win10 x64. Regards, Dave

Plugin development foe v6.x
Hi, I am trying to modify a v5 plug-in to run under v6 but while it installs OK its icon doesn't appear in the tools menu. I have noticed the same symptom with other plug-ins if KiKit is not installed. I have previously done this with the "Show/Hide References" plug in and it does appear on the tools menu but with an ICON that is different to the one I provide in the zip file. Is there a dependency between plug-ins and KiKit ??? Is there something that needs configuring in KiKit or KiCad to support a new plug-in (other than the directory structure/layout and the json file - both of which I respect). Regards, Dave

Symbols for IC DIL sockets - where are they?
8
I have a project that contains symbols for 4 x 16pin DIL IC sockets that I was able to update my PCB from. But after a couple revisions and went back to change the design but now it complains that that symbol doesnt exist and "rescues" it. Trying to change the symbol from the library but unable to find any symbols for DIL sockets ?? These connectors are used for an inter-board cable so I dont want to use one for a 16 pin IC. Running KiCad v6.0.5 x64 under Win 10. I'm surprised they dont exist, but I'll be darned if I can find one. What am I missing ?? Regards, Dave

Dead Kicad projects
5
I¡¯m fairly new to Kicad. I am using Kicad V5.1.9 on Windows 10. At the moment there are 5 files (file.pr) in File Explorer that show 0KB and I did something that caused the files to be lost. How can I delete the dead .PR project files from the File Explorer. The files were for test only, so I don¡¯t care if they are lost forever but I don¡¯t know what I did to lose them. Thanks to anyone for help. Jeff miller Sent from Mail for Windows

Question on Hotkeys Configuration
What will happen if two hotkeys.config files are in a system - (Different): One in the user configuration directory and one in the specific project directory? Which will take precedence or will they break something? Best Regards!

KiCAD Symbols from table (XLS, CSV, etc.). Is it real?
Hello Could anyone share how to design KiCAD Symbol using table (XLS, CSV, etc.), please. Does https://github.com/devbisme/KiPart will work with KiCAD 6? It seems that KiPART is very old... I know that KiCAD can use Pin Tables, but I need place each pin manually using `+` button. In OrCAD (used at my work) I can place entire columns (pin name, number, type, section, etc.) copied from XLS. This allow to design complex symbols with many sections (e.g. Stratix 10 FPGA) very fast. I will be grateful for any idea how to speedup such process in KiCAD... -- Best Regards, Victor

KiCad 6.0.4 Save Issue
6
#gettingstarted
Hello - I have recently installed KC 6.0.4 on a Windows 10 platform. I have a file repository for projects on a Ubuntu server running Samba, open permissions. When I attempt to save a schematic I get the following errors: 10:16:31 AM: Failed to copy the file 'C:\Users\tradice\AppData\Local\Temp\eesDA04.tmp' to 'H:\Projects\WWVRcvr\WWVRcvr.kicad_sch' (error 5: Access is denied.) 10:16:31 AM: File 'C:\Users\tradice\AppData\Local\Temp\eesDA04.tmp' couldn't be renamed 'H:\Projects\WWVRcvr\WWVRcvr.kicad_sch' (error 5: Access is denied.) 10:17:28 AM: Failed to copy the file 'C:\Users\tradice\AppData\Local\Temp\eesB989.tmp' to 'H:\Projects\WWVRcvr\CNotes.kicad_sch' (error 5: Access is denied.) 10:17:28 AM: File 'C:\Users\tradice\AppData\Local\Temp\eesB989.tmp' couldn't be renamed 'H:\Projects\WWVRcvr\CNotes.kicad_sch' (error 5: Access is denied.) I have verified I have full administrative rights to my local (C) directory and the permissions to the repository (H) are set open on both Linux and Samba. I am NOT initiating KiCad on the Windows machine in administrative mode, although I have done so and tested, with the same results. An odd end result / also observed effect is all of the component values that were saved have vanished, although the reference designators are still intact??? Could someone guide me as to where I am going wrong? Thank You!

Auto Place Footprints not respecting "locked" footprint status ...
2
Hi, I am running KiCad 6.04 under Win 10 Pro x64 and I am keen to try "auto placement" of footprints. The board I am trying it on has a number of locked connectors but when I select the whole board and use Auto Place on selected items it moves the locked items as well :-( There are only 5 locked items but 150 other components so selecting only the unlocked items is a pain. It also does not respect "keepout" areas which strikes me as wrong. Is there an option to have it respect locked items ?? If I move the unlocked items off the board and use the "off board" option it does what I want, but moving the unlocked items offboard is, as I have said above, a pain. Regards, Dave

Hello, There are LT4200 datasheet https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/lt4200.pdf Any idea how to create "comb pad" shape (outlined red)? Can I draw shape like filled polygon and then assign as pad? Or draw some rectangular primitives and merge them and finally convert to pad? How to do it right way? Best Regards, Victor

How to print the front silkscreen so that it could be used for toner transfer to milled PCB
7
#gettingstarted
HI, Just diving back into Kicad 6 after being away from it for a while. Needed to do a small PCB which I've milled successfully and have tested. Since this is a one off I'm not planning on sending it out to a board house and I just for fun wanted to try doing a silk screen using the toner transfer method. In the PCB Editor the view is from the bottom of the board, but it looks like the F.Silkscreen is displaying as if it was on the bottom of the PCB. So I tried printing the F.Silkscreen Mirrored. But while that gives me horizontal text that would transfer OK the rest of the board is flipped as well so that is not going to work. For example I have a connector that is in the upper left corner of the PCB (looking at the top of the PCB) and another connector that is about in the middle on the right hand side of the PCB. The mirrored print of the F.Silkscreen layer has then one connector in the upper left corner and the other one in the middle on the right side. But when you turn the printed layer over to transfer the toner to the PCB you now have the first connector in the upper RIGHT corner and the 2nd one in the middle on the LEFT side, which of course is incorrect. If I print the F.Silkscreen without mirroring then it will transfer properly as far as component locations and vertical text, but horizontal text would be reversed. So what am I missing? Is there a way to do what I'm trying to accomplish? I guess for now I can change all the horizontal text to vertical orientation and print without mirroring. Thanks, Burt

Fedora Linux: 6.0.2 for F34 and F35
Normally, we don't do major version changes in stable Fedora releases, but because of several CVE's against 5.1.12, we are in the process of releasing KiCad 6.0.2 into Fedora 34 and 35. Right now, the new builds for F34 and F35 are in the "testing" stage; here are links to the relevant bodhi pages: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2022-05798cf6bb https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2022-78b18981a6 I've set the karma requirements to "1", so if anyone using Fedora 34 or 35 is willing to test and up-vote, then we can distribute the new versions quickly. If not, they should be distributed after a 7 day delay. While it is discouraged, if you want/need to stay on 5.1.12, you can edit /etc/dnf/dnf.conf and add the following line at the end of the file: exclude=kicad* That will prevent all further updates to KiCad - you will remain on 5.1.12 until you remove that line again. Thanks, Steve
