Re: Yahoo Groups shutting down
Well, if we do need to move to some sort of paid platform, I'll chip in. But if they have a free option, that's great too.
I would think that there would be some way to include a small amount of advertising and have a free forum. But I don't know.

Re: Yahoo Groups shutting down
I don't see why this group is necessary, just let it die. Better to just use kicad forum!

I've got no hard opinions, but it seems kind of silly to set up another split community when the kicad forum is relatively vibrant and this one has long had minimal traffic. (This is only the 13th thread this year if I counted correctly)? There's always other reasons like personalities/culture that are valid, but keeping a positive culture seems to be a priority over there as well.
Minor side note, the Discourse (the forum platform which runs ) does allow for replying to posts via email.? Posting new topics via email is also possible, but a bit clunky...? ?

Not entirely true.?
With the influx of new groups from the
Yahoo shutdown they are requiring all
transfers to be to a Premium group and
pay for a year at $110.? After the first
year you can change the group to a free
one.? This is stated clearly on the
transfer instructions page.
I haven't seen
anything about this policy in regards to
open source groups.?
---In kicad-users@...,

It only
costs that if you want extra space.
The free version comes with 1Gb of
space. I'm on a
couple of large lists (8,000-9,000
members) that moved to the free
version a while ago and they find
it to not be a big problem. Message
don't count to the space usage but
attachments, photos and
files do. I don't know how much space
is used in this group currently so I
don't know if this is a
problem.
Administrators have control over who
can post photos (which tend to be the
biggest consumer) and
also how large the images can be. You
can also set it so that if you are
running out of space it
automatically deletes old attachments.
They also say that open source
projects are free - though it isn't
clear if that means that open
source projects can just use the free
service or if they can get one of the
paid levels for free.
Groups.io also has an automated
conversion from Yahoo Groups to
Groups.io that has worked well on
all the lists I'm on that moved.
Service has been much better on
Groups.io than Yahoo Groups and I
belong to quite a number of lists
on Groups.io (11 at last count) that
moved from Yahoo and I doubt that any
of them are using a paid
version.
That is my "free" suggestion.
