View-> Grid settings -> Fast switching
With Alt+1 and Alt+2 grid switching is performed.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately "Fast Switching" is only for the PCB layout tool. It is not available in the Symbol Editor, which is what I need for making schematic symbols.
