Fw: [RailScan] Radio Memories
FYI 73, LLOYD N2KPC ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Dennis Snyder via groups.io <dlswpfl@...> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 08:44:28 PM EST Subject: [RailScan] Radio Memories I enjoyed the recent "Radio Shack" memories thread, oh what memories! While looking for something a few minutes ago I saw some photos ya'll might enjoy, although not directly RR related. Being retired from Fire-Rescue communications was to say the least interesting! How'd ya like to have a radio room with this setup? That setup is inside this, our "CCU" :Command and Communications Unit." It's parked here at the back door of the 911 center. For a multiple alarm fire or emergency it's dispatched to the scene as a command center. Being in the Orlando area and subject to hurricanes if we're in the direct path of an approaching one a team takes off out of the area in this so in case of massive destruction it can return as a back-up communications center. It has a five line cell phone system as well has hard wire connection panel to the landline system if needed. This is the main control center building of our trunked radio system at the base of a 300 foot self supporting tower. Each leg of the tower sits on a base like this. After the rebar was lowered into the eight foot diameter hole it was filled with concrete. It was constructed to withstand up to 200 mph winds. Inside the building this is where the system was set up. And you think your "smart phone" setting's section is complicated? :-) Just think, these are old photos from the 1990's and having been retired awhile can't imagine what it's like now! Dennis WPFL -- 73, Lloyd N2KPC TEN-TEC Amateur Radio Net Manager.

Hello All
3
Been a long time since I have said howdy to everyone, so, howdy, and hope all are doing well. I have not been in the amateur community in quite a while, and am thinking of dusting off my 588 and seeing if it still works. I'm still just a lowly no CW tech, I am honestly going to look at upgrading, and learning a bit of dit dah. Funny, how long have I been a Tech? a LONG time, but, well, time gets in the way a LOT for me. Those that don't know, I am a freelance software developer and run my own LLC out of my home, and have several clients, 1 mainly that keeps me so busy I can't even breathe at times, that is a good thing. And to those others that don't know, I worked at TenTec when it was Jack Burchfield days at the old Sevierville location (which is now a Walmart, ugh, hurts when I see that, oh well), and I wrote a most of the 588 software (all except the DSP details that Gary Barbour did before me). I left just after it was bought by RFC and the big hemorrhage occurred. That was extremely tough to see. Anyway, I heard the news of the new rig, and I want to wish Dishop all the success in the world, and hope y'all understand what it has taken for him to get to this point. I'm extremely impressed he is still afloat, but that old cuss (funny, I'm about his exact age, history, etc) he just won't quit. And I hope y'all will like that new rig as much as I understand it to be from one discussion with him. Nope, no details. Nope, not the class. Nope, not the style. Nada, that is his toy, and his new starting point. It has a lot of extremely interesting new features built in and should be a great starting block for TenTec to get going again. PROVIDING Y'ALL SHELL OUT SOME SHECKLES for it.... lol I honestly think he is going to charge too little, but I know a lot of you will say too much (and no, I won't divulge anything we've chatted on, he speaks more with Lloyd than me, but, we chat off and on once every 3 to 6 months or so) I also don't know if he had any of his better rigs (e.g. 588+, 599, 565, etc), if they would sell, is price ok, is featuring ok, I know there is a LOT of competition in terms of 73xx's, and the benefits the newer style rigs bring. But to me, nothing beats the "sound" from an old Jupiter then the OMNI-VII or Orions or Eagles when properly tuned and set up, but I'm biased. I know internet connectivity on the 588 worked great at times and then had issues at times, well, it is what it is now, and for me, I always had more network available than what was needed so for me, they just purred on Rx and Tx remote times, of course there are better easier more plug n play today. If he holds an open house any time at the factory, please stop by and say howdy to him, I know he mentioned going to Dayton or whatever it is called now, so, at least say howdy then. -- 73 KI4JPL John Henry

Ten-Tec CW Net Results for February 10, 2025
Good evening, Thank you to Mike (W3TS) for his assistance in acting as the NCS for the 80-meter net segment on short notice. We genuinely appreciate his assistance. Stan (W4AG) and Dean (N2TNN) were gone tonight. They should be back next week. Congratulations to Tony (VE3DWI), George (W5GS), Dave (N1CGP), Bill (K8ZCT) and Mike (W3TS) for making all three bands tonight. Peter (KT4NN), Chuck (AA0RI) and Ted (N8TJE) made it in on two bands. Conditions were good overall tonight except for an AM station which came on top of the net on 7.063 MHz about 15 minutes after the hour. The AM broadcaster made communication difficult. A special thanks to Rich (NA6F) who prepares the primary log for the Ten-Tec Nets. Most importantly, thank you to all who took time out of your busy schedules to check in with us tonight. 73, Rich N0ENO 20 Meter Net W5GS George MS KX3 589 (QRP) Bencher W3TS Mike PA Orion 599 (QRP on Orion) Brass Racer AJ4YA Grady NC Argonaut 6 579 (QRP) J38 N8TJE Ted PA Flex 599 Vibroplex KI4VH Jim GA Scout 599 Vibroplex VE3DWI Tony ON Flex 599 Bencher N1CGP Dave ME K3S 589 Vibroplex K8ZCT Bill OH K3S Speed X N0ENO (NCS) Rich KS KWTS590SG Bencher 40 Meter Net W5GS George MS K3S 599 Kent VE3DWI Tony ON Flex 589 Bencher W3TS Mike PA Orion 599 Brass Racer K8ZCT Bill OH K3S 599 Speed X N8FL Alan WV IC7300 589 J37 K9DY Steve FL IC7300 559 Vibroplex N1CGP Dave ME K3S 559 Vibroplex KT4NN Peter FL Yaesu 891 569 J38 KC2SIZ Steve NY Century 21 449 Brown Bros KT5LA Jay CA 559 AA0RTI Chuck AZ Eagle 599 ZN-SL Paddle KC0RTI John KS KWTS590SG 599 Bencher AB0UY Deb KS KWTS590SG 599 Bencher N0ENO (NCS) Rich KS KWTS590SG Bencher 80 Meter Net K8ZCT Bill OH K3S 599 Speedex KT4NN Peter FL Yaesu 891 579 J38 N8TJE Ted PA Flex 599 Vibroplex VE3DWI Tony ON Flex 599 Bencher W5GS George MS K3S 579 Kent N1CGP Dave ME K3S 599 Vibroplex N0ENO Rich KS KWTS590SG 579 Bencher AA0RI Chuck AZ Eagle 339 ZNSL W3TS (NCS) Mike PA Orion Brass Racer
