WKUSB Speaker output

Recently built my kit and extremely pleased with the results except for the on-board speaker level.I use hearing aids and have tried all I know to increase the volume. I hear pretty well but can barely tell that the tones are present. Difficult to practice with my Benchers. Help appreciated!

Thanks

Charlie

Charlie,
The sidetone speaker in WKUSB is physically small and is not capable of producing a loud sidetone. In addition, the response peaks over a very narrow range. You can increase the volume by lowering the value of R6, 47 ohms is about as low as I would go.

Beyond that, you only have two options, the first is to pick a sidetone frequency that is closer to the peak response of the speaker 2000 Hz is loud but is very high pitched.

The second option is to add a jack so you can use an external speaker.

The thing to remember is that you only really need WKUSB's internal sidetone to set commands in standalone mode. Use your radio's internal sidetone for QSOs.

I opted for #2. I added an 1/8-in. jack to the back of my WinKeyer. I then plug in a battery-powered computer speaker with a built-in amplifier that I bought for a couple of bucks at Dayton two or three years ago. This combination works great when I want a little more oomph from the keyer.

Can someone point out the location of R6? There is no schematic or parts layout in the WKUSB manual.
Thanks and 73, Mike W2IY
