Trouble Getting WinKey Remote To Work Outside My LAN

开云体育

Hi all-

Dave K2DH here.? I’m looking for some suggestions/ideas.

?

I’ve been using WinKey Remote to operate CW at my remote station in Upstate NY when I’m at my winter home in FL.? It’s been working fine for 2 years, but I’ve run into a problem I can’t seem to resolve since I changed ISP’s.

?

Here’s my system:? WinKey Remote Client on my desktop PC at the home station, WinKey Remote Server on the laptop I take to Florida.? When set up the way it used to work, it still does, AS LONG AS I’M INSIDE MY LAN here at the home station.

?

Note:? I’m also running Green Heron Everyware client/server software to control my rotor, antenna switches, power switches, etc and this all works fine remotely.

?

When WinKey Remote used to work, I had a router and static IP provided by the cable company and I would connect through it to the PC.? I dropped cable and went to fiber and now have a static IP at the fiber modem and the modem is connected to a NETGEAR R6700v3 router connected to all my devices.? The PC is hard wired to the router thru a switch and as I said, the WinKey programs work fine together with the laptop also connected to the router in this mode.? If I either take the laptop elsewhere or connect it wirelessly to my phone running as a wifi hotspot, I cannot connect to the PC/WinKey Client.? I get the following error message in the server program at the laptop: “Initializing Winsock Client…” followed by “Error: Data record not found”.

?

My settings at the server are as follows:

Program Startup: Open TCP/IP Connect (checked)

Network I/F: Net Client

IP Address: 104.244.193.117 (the Static IP of the Fiber modem)

IP Port: 3890

IP Address Override is NOT checked

Control Point

?

My remote side settings are as follows:

Program Startup:? Same as above

Network I/F:? Net Server

IP Address:? Greyed Out

IP Port: 3890

IP Address Override is NOT checked

Remote Side

?

The laptop is connected to the phone and I can surf the Internet when connected this way.

I suspect my problem is IP address-related, but I don’t know what to set it to- I tried setting it to the IP of the Desktop (Remote) PC, but that didn’t connect.

?

Any ideas anyone?

?

Thanks in advance!

Dave,
Sorry, but your technology?level is beyond me. I have not worked on WKremote in quite a few years so
have fallen behind in changes to network configurations and connections. There are so many better
choices for CW over IP now. WKremote had it's day years ago.

Steve,

What are some of my choices to accomplish this?? I hadn’t heard of any (I’m a little bit behind, I guess).

Dave, I have the same problem.? Did you ever find a solution?? Running client here at home, have public IP from Starlink at the remote, but modem VPN? causes the remote LAN to be connected to my home LAN - I can "see" all of the LAN devices out there.? I am trying to connect to the computer using port 3890.? This used to work back when I had cable in a different location.
?
Thanks, 73, John, K2CIB

I just got it to work.? I was using the address of the computer in the LAN.? I changed it to the public IP address, and lo and behold, it works.? I also changed the port forwarding for 3890 to TCP/UDP, but I don't think that helped.

I couldn’t get Winkey Remote to even work locally on Windows 11.
?
The software I use is RemoteCW:
?
You can use paddles with 2 Winkeys using RemoteCW, as well as Keyboard sending and “canned” messages (CQ calls, etc).
