Locked Virtual Sound Decoder - Clicks on looped sound files

Conrad,

You're welcome!

Sorry for the trouble with the D1.wav file. I should have mentioned that the modified notch file is called D1k.wav. But my 645 VSD file also contains the original file called D1.wav. In the config.xml I then chosed D1k.wav.

Regards,
Klaus

Klaus,
I downloaded your 645 file and it played perfectly.? Thank you.? However, when i installed the D1 wav file into my 645 program i got nowhere.? Even after i corrected several of my typo error the sound went dead at notch 2.? So i ran your wav file thru my WavePad Sound Editor (played ok and is correct format) and tried again. same problem.? if i quickly run the throttle past notch 2 the rest of the notches play but i can't got back or cross notch 2 without a lockup.
I'll take a break from this to clear my mind.
And, still no luck in uploading. i get, via browse, the file.? it appears in the "drag & paste" window (5.19 mb) with "loading file 1 of 1" and ..............? nothing.? just looks like a lockup.? ?oh well. my next attempt will be on another computer.

Conrad,

I found your 645 VSD file, thank you! I compared the file with my 645 VSD file and couldn't see a difference - except the D1.wav/D1k.wav.

Yes, I saw and heard the click-clack sound. It can be switched on and off. But it is played at a constant speed.

Regards,
Klaus

Klaus,
Upload worked on second computer.? Of course it is on my 645 dropbox file. not the latest, no notes and maybe a funny thing with click-clack.? It does have the 5 notches though.
Finally,
Conrad

Klaus,

I just opened your config file and saw the D1k.wav.? So, on my file, I switched to D1k and no clicks. Nice.??
My error was in just looking at your sound files and using D1.

On another subject, do you have any info on relative sound volumes?? On several of my projects some sounds are very loud and don't respond to the "master" volume slider and on some others the sounds are too low in relation to the engine sounds.? I think I saw a previous post on this, but I can't find it.

Klaus,

Forget sound volume questions.? I found your posts of Apr 2017.

Conrad

Thanks for your quick reply, Conrad!

I'd like to add a remark. If a sound is very loud, maybe the master volume cannot correct it. I think the best way in this case is to edit the file with an Audio Editor (Audacity, for example, has a Normalize or Amplify function).

Just a reminder: in config.xml the gain parameter applies to all notch sounds when used as follows ...

<sound name="ENGINE" type="diesel3">
...
<gain>0.7</gain>

Klaus

Klaus,

Problem with volume is not so much engine noise rather, in one or two cases, horn sound does not respond to "master" volume slide and is at max volume.

And in another case the bell is very weak.? I'll try to fix it with "gain"

PS I think I just found an open source for loco wave files.? It's Zimo!? Not sure but I don't see any copyright disclaimers (unlike Digitrax).?
Some are both free and in .zip format.

That is indeed a very good source. I look at the ZIMO operation instructions and the Sound Database frequently.

Here you can find the copyright disclaimers:

The .zip files you mentioned are very easy to adapt to a config.xml format. I would share such a config.xml, but not the sound files. I fear they are bound to ZIMO sound decoders (I have a couple of ZIMO standard decoders, but no ZIMO sound decoder).

Also worth mentioning is the software "ZIMO Sound Programmer" ZSP. It's free and allows loading and hearing (steam, only) the .zip files.

Klaus

Klaus,

Yes, I did read the Zimo page you referenced but I did not see a explicit? copyright disclaimer, something akin to the open source licence with JMRI, etc.? All of my work is for my own private use.? I just don't know if I can share it (for free).? It's my hobby, not a business (too old anyway).

Of course, once i stumbled on Zimo I dropped my work on clicks, pops, and funny volumes and went right into trying to create a vsd file from their NW2 zip file.? So far no success.? I used an original NW2 vsd config file as a template and moved Zimo's wav files from their zip file to the vsd "sounds" sub-folder.? I also tested each wav file for format and identity as they are in german - kompressor vs. compressor:).? ?The result so far is failure.? In the "configure new VSDecoder" window I can "load VSD file" but nothing appears in the "select a profile" drop-down window.? This is where I'm at.

I am not sure what you mean by the zip files being easy to adapt to config.xml format.? I only see the wav files and a zpr folder which, unlike vsd, I cannot rename as zip and extract.? In addition, what do you mean by the wav files being bound to Zimo?? Is that why I am stuck on the NW2 project?

Conrad

PS I'm up to sharing a config file.?

Conrad,

Right, that's obviously a new topic and I recommend to start a new one.

There you can reference to the your last posting with /g/jmriusers/message/163579 (if you like).

I will then answer there. Thanks in advance.

Klaus

I am still finding my way around this. Would someone please point me to information on creatng vsd files from my sound files?

Thank you,

Steve Bartlett

Steve,
Need more info.? I assume you are using JMRI since you are on this group.? Have you downloaded the basic .vsd files?? What specifically are your sound files?? Are they .wav and what format (8/16 bit, sample rate, compressed/uncompressed)?

To make this all work you will need an .xml editor, an audio editor and an "unzipper" utility.? And, per below,? "You must also have the OpenAL or JavaSound audio system installed on your computer."

I'd start here:?

Also are you in linux, windows or apple?

Once you get the basic going I'd search this site for VSD.? You will see lots of info going back to 2011.? I reversed the date scroll to look at earliest to latest.

Lots of work, but well worth it.? You'll be shaking the walls.
