Locked Operations: Interchange Tracks & Car Movement
Should this work?I have a location called Republic Steel, which has some 15 spurs. ?It is served by 13 trains operating from RSC Yard to the Steel mill spurs & back. ?These trains lift from interchange tracks in RSC Yard which only accept cars destined for Republic Steel. The mainline connects to the mill via the West Perryville interchange. ?Inbound tracks at this interchange are only allowed to accept cars destined for Republic Steel. ?The inbound tracks are allowed to be used by mainline trains for set out only. ?The interchange transfer runs are only allowed to lift cars from these inbound tracks for delivery to RSC Yd which has tracks set-up for receiving car destined to Republic Steel. In effect, one crew handles the interchange transfers from the mainline interchange to RSC Yard. ?A second crew does all the mill lifts and set-outs from RSC Yd to the mill spurs.
It seemed to work for a while, but now, a whole bunch of cars show up at the West Perryville interchange, and do not move on from there. ?Reviewing the destinations for these cars, they are all indicated to be sent to West Perryville, but have no Final Destination indicated. ?Why do these cars show up on this track? I'm missing some understanding here about how cars are forwarded. ?This isn't the only location where I have cars showing up, only to have no where to go. ?The manual says this can happen if one is not careful, but I think I have been careful in this regard. ?How do I correct this?? I used to have West Perryville accept cars for West Perryville and RSC Yd, only to have cars show up there, use the transfer run to RSC Yd, use another Transfer run to get them back to West Perryville, and then back on a mainline train off to staging. ?I thought restricting destinations to only Repuplic Steel at both West Perryville and RSC Yd. would stop that. ?It seemed to for a while, but now I have these cars at West Perryville that aren't going anywhere. Best regards, Mike |
Hi Mike,
Is your issue cars on interchange tracks that don't belong there, or cars on interchange tracks that don't move? More below. ---In jmriusers@..., <mcerpsligo@...> wrote : Should this work?I have a location called Republic Steel, which has some 15 spurs. What do you mean when you say " Reviewing the destinations for these cars, they are all indicated to be sent to West Perryville". I don't understand what your reviewing. The only thing the program uses to forward a car to a destination is the "Final Destination" field which is set by a schedule, or by a car that was given a custom load. >Why do these cars show up on this track? Because they are allowed to go there, look at the build report, it should state why the program was able to send the cars there.. How do I correct this?? You need to somehow restrict which cars are allowed to be set out. If you tell us what the criteria should be for a car to be set out to an interchange track, we could then figure out how to only allow that to happen. There's a tool that allows you to select a train, and a car, and see if the train can pull and deliver the car to a new location. See the tool "Show car types serviced". The only trains allowed to lift cars from the inbound interchange tracks are the transfer runs to RSC YD, hence unless the Final Destination shows Republic Steel, the cars will never move again. ?That part makes sense to me.?The train build report shows 4 cars available at East Staging, all are empty (E). ?2-1/2 pages of printout report on attempts to route one car, GN 75738, type GB. REPLY: ?The restriction is basically Destination: ?Republic Steel. ?Because the mill is quite large with many spurs, almost every car type can go there for ultimate loading or unloading. ?An empty GB is permitted, since it can load plate or sheet. ?A loaded GB with scrap steel is permitted, since it can unload at the open hearth furnace. REPLY: ?Ultimately, yes, there are trains that can handle these cars, but only if the Final Destination is shown to be Republic Steel. ?It has been happening. ?I have removed a lot of the Load Options from these interchange tracks, because the list would be huge, and ?I was having difficulty managing it. ?Only certain car types are not permitted, such as SM & RA. ?The destination restriction made everything a lot simpler, but I cannot allow Destinations of West Perryville Interchange or RSC Yd, because then I would get cars showing up, being taken to RSC Yd, then pushed back out the the interchange, and back on a mainline train further east or west. I include the build report for your review. I appreciate your help Dan, as sometimes I run out of time and patience to get things done in time for a smooth operation. ?I certainly understand the program much better now, than 2 years ago when this project started, but something in this build report seems odd, in that 4 cars were forwarded to the interchange without the appropriate Final Destination being given. I have attached two scanned documents, the 243 Build Report and the Roster listing for West Perryville at the end of session. ?I have 3 tank cars located on the interchange, inbound to the mill, but with no Final Destination! ?This is the part I'm not understanding. Mike,
You can restrict your interchange tracks to only accept cars that have a final destination. This prevents cars from wondering to an interchange track.
