Track Analysis Tool
#operationspro
First off, yes, probably have too many boxcars on the layout. ?So I ran the track analysis tool for boxcars and the results were:
Spurs. ?Track length 2877. 141%
Yard. ?Track length 2070. ?196%
CI. ?Track length 2635. ?154%
Staging. Track length 1050. ?386%
?
I run in Aggressive mode with 2 passes and get good car movement, however I do need to add flatcars and gondolas as they were down below 20% in total of all track types.
?
To what level should I be adjusting the boxcar percentages for best utilization?

It only means that your flatcars can only take 20% of the available track space, or 1/5 five cars could be a flatcar going to one of those track types.? I wouldn't change a thing. ?
With regards to boxcars, I agree with you, you might have a few too many!

开云体育Gents, ? Just wondering, where do I find the ‘track analysis tool’? ? I do not seem to be able to find it. ? Noel ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Dan Boudreau via groups.io

This is the first I've heard of this tool and glad to learn more about OpsPro! ?
?
Situation - some of my cars were not only "out of service" but also off layout (on the bench - the real RIP track!) and I also have a transport box to carry rolling stock to my club's train shows, etc. ?To "solve" the issue of the out of service cars taking up space on actual spurs and yard tracks, I created a location called OFF LAYOUT and just put two spurs there: workbench and travel box. ?Each spur being an arbitrary 1000' long and the location accepts all car types.
?
Question - now when I play with my new found 'track analysis' tool, I see that my percentage fills are actually artificially low (because of the 2,000' of off layout spurs). ?Any other ideas on how to spot cars that are off layout and get a more accurate picture of how full my tracks are by car type? |
开云体育Byran, ? I have created a ‘spur/track’ which is a box for my cars that I rotate of the layout. Example I have a train that brings 5 cars on at the start of an operating session, then I physically place them where required. At the end of the session I have a train made up on a spur/track for off layout storage. I then physically remove the cars into the storage box. This allows me to keep the number of cars on the layout to a manageable level and ensure rotation of rolling stock. I do not have the physical space to build a storage yard etc. ? Noel ? Bryan,
?
If you don't mind a couple of pop-ups to answer each time you move the cars into OFF LAYOUT, just set the length of the two spurs to 0 feet.? This should keep the analysis tool happy.? As I mentioned, you will be informed that there isn't room and then if you want to force the car in there anyway... Answer yes and it goes!
?
Alternately, if the zero footage thingy doesn't work, you can just "set" all the cars you take off the layout, to "nowhere", meaning just choose the blank option at the top of the Locations list pull-down.? While this doesn't help you to see where you actually have the cars (workbench vs travel box), it will solve the length problem when using the analyzer...
?
Happy to help, hope it helps,

Thank you Noel and Pete!
Noel - that’s pretty much how I have it set up.? Pete - thanks for jogging my memory about putting 5# of coffee in a 3# can. ?I’ve done that before, just forgot. ?I don’t move cars “there” often so the 0’ long spurs will work nicely with the location and tracks I have set up as Noel describes.? |
