Locked DecoderPro has 'Read Type from decoder' grayed out

Have been using JMRI DecoderPro for several years now but getting issue with latest installs.
Set up is programming track accessed via Digitrax PR3.? Running JMRI 4.12 (had identical issue on 4.10).? Java version 1.8.0_171(en_NZ) Laptop running Windows 10 Home version 1803 OS Build 17134.228.
Whan I fire up DecoderPro, it comes up with my roster (approximately 60 locomotives).? All looks fine at this stage.?
If I try 'New Loco', "Create New Loco" comes up with a list of Decoder installed but both 'Read type from decoder' and Open Comprehensive Programmer' are greyed out.
If I go to a Roster Entry, I can see the current details but both Read buttons are greyed out,?? I can change an entry and it appears to work - for example I changed a DCC address and confirmed it had been changed.
If I try 'Identify', DecoderPro will read the CVs (can see the messages in the status bar plus it picks the right roster entry.? However as above, cannot read the CVs when you open the programmer.
I'm set up to use a Digitrax connection via the Loconet PR3 as a stand-alone Loconet using COM3 as the serial port.? Connection defaults are all Loconet.? As far as I know everything else is set to default.
I've had things running properly in the past from another laptop running Windows 7.? The roster file and the xml files were copied from the original laptop and I've added some new ones.? All have the same issue.

Suggest you check the “defaults” tab within “preferences”.??

There have been a lot of cases where various elements move to “internal” rather than your actual system. ??That often deals with the issue you are reporting.

Check in the lower-right quadrant of the main DecoderPro (roster) window that you don’t have “Edit Only” selected.

Nigel, Bob
Thanks for the suggestions.
Unfortunately neither have helped.? I am an experienced JMRI user and was aware of the possible settings issue.? I also can confirm the correct program option for me, Programming Track, has been selected.
At my model railway club, I run three more JMRI installations.? I'm due to upgrade these and the hardware they run on.? As one of these also has a PanelPro design that runs a layout, I am concerned that this issue will impact these installations.? They running on old hardware, old versions of Java/JMRI and Windows XP so are desperately needing upgrading.? Budget has been approved but I don't want to hit this issue there!
I can program existing roster entries but not read from them.? As standard I do look to adjust the running characteristics of each locomotive using DecoderPro as a minimum and the lighting for suitably equipped ones.

Clive,

? ? Have you tried the "Rebuild Roster" in the Roster window yet?

Roger

You said the roster was copied from another machine.??

Check the ownership of the roster files, and the permissions on the folder, within the operating system.?? Should be fully accessible to the user who is logged in when running JMRI.?

Whilst I’ve not seen this with JMRI, I have known files copied into a Windows PC from elsewhere be marked as “suspect” by the operating system, and that setting needs changing before they fully work.

?

And, as Roger suggested, “rebuild roster” may be needed (and don’t think it can cause harm).?

?

The problem is going to be a setting or permission somewhere.?

Thanks so far for the comments. ?Let me get more specific. ? The decoder pro loads but when i hit the identify icon it tries to read the CV29 and than an error comes up in the programmer status which says timeout talking to command station (306. ? ?Normally with Windows the loco jerks when I do this and the red light on the PR3 flash’s fast. ? ?It is almost that the loco is not responding. ? ? The same configuration works with my friends windows computer. ?This is a newer MacBook Air with intel core processor. ? ?I am using the programming track. ?

One other thing code 306 suggests picking the wrong serial port is the problem. ?Makes sense. ? But when you go to preferences and connections the port is selected for you. ? And when I go to the Apple info on the USB where the Digitrax is connected it gives me a location ID of 0x14100000/7. ? ? The serial port is cu.usnmodem1411 which I think is a mismatch. ? ?How can you match this. ? Or is it another problem. ?

Al- You might try changing the assigned com port to 7 in device manager.

Have worked out where the problem lies.? The downloaded JMRI installer had been marked as 'Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.'?
I exported the roster and de-installed JMRI. I had to manually delete the program files - naughty the uninstaller leaves these on the system!
I unblocked the installer and re-installed.?
I imported the roster and have resolved the grayed out issue.
It looks to me that some components of JMRI were not installed properly when Windows blocked installation.? So it may be that other functions may not have worked!
I couldn't find any of the originally installed files marked as blocked.

One outstanding issue - my roster had media files attached to each entry.? When I exported the roster, these were not included and it's impossible to recognise which bmp files are which!? Is this something that needs to be addressed or have I missed something??
