Locked decoder pro showing idle

I am using Digitrax dcs50 with a Locobuffer via a lap top running Windows 10 every time I enter Decoder Pro it shows idle and will not let me program any models I have tried 4.18 and am now using 4.12 but the same result any help please I have all the preference checked and they are the same as before.?
Thank you David Brown

Have you checked Device Manager in Windows to check that the Locobuffer is actually seen and working as far as Windows is concerned? plug/unplug a few times and watch that it appears and disappears and is not marked with a yellow warning, and also note the Com port. ?Get that right first, if the Locobuffer isn’t registering with Windows no amount of uninstalling and reinstalling JMRI will have any effect at all.

When that’s all OK, Then go to JMRI and check in the preferences that the correct com port is selected and indeed that your profile is set up for the DCS50. ?If it still doesn’t work, suspect the cables, the Locobuffer and the DCS50, in that order.

David,

To check if the LocoBuffer-USB itself is working properly, go to the LocoNet drop down list and select 'Monitor LocoNet Stats' (4th item) This should show you the version number of the unit and some other info. Note that the system must be connected and powered for this to work properly. If the result is a string of empty boxes then something is either set incorrectly or not working. Running a more than year old version is seldom helpful. (just sayin') (just don't use 4.16)

The baud rate setting on a COM port in Device Manager is irrelevant (it's only a default setting).

When JMRI opens a COM port, it always overrides the default setting in Device Manager and uses the setting in JMRI Connection Preferences.

David,

Which version of JMRI are you using? 4.16 has a baud rate bug. Switch up to 4.18 if you have not already.

I am using 4.18 would I be better off with latest trial version?

David,

As long as you do not have 4.16 it should be working OK.

Make sure that:

a) The command station is ON. (this item covers some percentage of my tech support calls, so I have to ask)
b) The Preferences > Connections have System connection listed as 'LocoNet LocoBuffer-USB'. (not for example 'Loconet LocoBuffer')
c) The Serial port: selection matches the Device Manager information for the Ports (COM & LPT) entry for the LocoBuffer-USB.
c) The Preferences > Defaults have 'LocoNet' radio buttons selected for Service Programmer. (probably all the other items as well)
d) The LocoBuffer-USB has two green lights and the red LED flickers when you use a throttle to control a train.
e) The LocoBuffer-USB works OK on another computer and layout. This may be hard to check with social distancing in effect, or you live in Saskatoon. (at least until the snow lets up)

Hello Dick I reset Loconet buffer as you said ie to LocoNet LocoBuffer-USB and the baud rate returned to 57600 and all seems to be working OK
Thanks for all your help? ?David Brown
