Locked Issue recognizing locomotive - Atlas N MP15DC
Hello,
I'm attempting to get my Atlas N MP15DC (Item # 40003825) to work with JMRI, but am having some problems. I found another thread where someone was asking about which decoder to use, and they were recommended to try the NCE NMP15. /g/jmriusers/topic/28709709#154333 However, that particular one doesn't seem to be working for me. I tried opening the Simple Programmer window inside of DecoderPro just to see if it could read off any CV values, but nothing comes back for CV7 or CV8, I'm only getting error code 301. I don't believe it to be a problem with the Sprog 3 and JMRI setup I've got, as I was able to connect to and configure a BLI 3752 GE AC6000 UP #7545 without any problems. Current setup: Windows 10 Sprog 3 JMRI 4.17.6+Rc861f38 Java version 1.8.0_231 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I'm still a newbie with this whole thing. I went ahead and logged a case with Atlas as well, just in case they can provide any additional info to me. |
Atlas web site document claims decoder would be LE063XF? from LENZ. ? They used either LENZ or NCE decoders. ? |
Hi Chucka, That seems to at least indicate that you can address the decoder. Try programming 'on the main' instead - that gets rid of the whole feedback pulse scenario. It could be a good idea to then program the appropriate CVs for consisting so any possible consist is deleted. Maybe that releases your loco. If engine not working that might be a fault.
"Lights are toggling "? what does this mean... Toggling NOT under your control ?? or toggling because you selected the decoder and use a function button ? " Toggling front/ear "? could be an error condition for all we know. The "Read type from decoder" should find the proper values. If not, even if you select LENZ, it probably will not work. Marc |
I'm able to select lights to toggle front/rear when selecting forward or reverse, so they are at least switching to the correct direction. I'll end up switching out this chip for the Digitrax that I should have soon, so hopefully that will work instead. On most decoders, you can't do readback if they don't have a working

motor connection. And programming on the programming track as well as identifying your decoder _does_ require working readback, even if it's just to acknowledge a write. Programming on main - as suggested earlier - works without readback, but it's not going to help with a broken motor connection... The fact that you can control the lights on your loco but it won't move indicates just that - no connection between decoder and motor (or broken motor, but that's rare). Readback and acknowledge work by the decoder creating little pulses in the supply current, which are then detected by the programming track circuitry. To do so, most decoders pulse the motor (which is also why locos tend to wiggle forwards or backwards during programming). Hope this helps, Heiko On 11/23/19 12:00 AM, Chuckaknuckle wrote:

Improbable but possible is that you have actually got two decoders in there, on different addresses. Could be worth checking out. Wouter On Sat, 23 Nov 2019 at 01:08, Heiko Rosemann <heiko.rosemann@...> wrote: On most decoders, you can't do readback if they don't have a working |
Wouter,
Dual decoder, when put on program track, should respond as the address is irrelevant.? Both decoders will try and respond.? he should get an ACK pulse No ACK pulse sounds like the motor control is gone: 1- broken wire,? 2-bad motor, 3-blown H-bridge on decoder, If the engine is not nudging forward during Service mode programming and is throwing a 301 error,? he is not spinning the motor. Marc, You're right. Should have thought of that. Goes haywire only on readbacks, not on programming. Stupid boy! :-) wouter On Sat, 23 Nov 2019 at 17:18, <forfoum@...> wrote: Wouter, |
Hey all,
?
Just providing an update on this issue. I think this message might not have attached to this topic originally, so just doing so now.
?
I received the Digitrax decoder and got it installed. I found that the pins that connect to the motor might have incidentally been slightly bent, as to prevent the decoder from connecting to the motor. I corrected the angle of the connections and everything seems to be working now.
I went back and tried out the original decoder again but didn't see any differences there, so it might be a bad chip, or at least one that neither the SPROG 3 or my new Digitrax DCS52 seem to want to pick up. I might eventually do some more tinkering with it. ?
I really appreciate all the suggestions! I¡¯m just glad it¡¯s working now with the new decoder. |
Have you checked that the tabs from the motor are making contact with the pads on the bottom of the decoder?? I've had them become misaligned so the motor was no longer connected to decoder.

Have you tried programming the Lenz decoder on your main track with your Digitrax system? I have a similar problem with an Atlas N scale GP40-2 that has a Digitrax DN163A0 decoder. JMRI using my Digitrax PR4 on my programming track will not recognize the this particular decoder, but I can program this decoder using my Digitrax DB150 command station and my DT500 throttle on the main track without any issues. I own several Digitrax DN163A0 decoders along with several Lenz LE063XF and this one particular decoder is the only one I've ever had this issue with, using the JMRI software and PR4.? Also of note, when I program this decoder on the main with my DB150 command station and DT500 throttle, it does nudge forward and the lights blink with each command issued. ?
