Locked LocoBuffer/Decoder Pro Problem

billroger

Jon et al:
More and I believe my problem is with the cable. I have this gadget that came with my DCS100, it's a telephone jack with a circuit board attached with what looks like 6 green LED's on the end. When I plug one end of my cable into the DCS100 and attached this gadget to the other end only 4 of the 6 green led's light. I read on this list that the white wire of the 6 wire cable should be on the RIGHT side. I cut a plug off one end and crimped another one on. Now as I look at the telephone jack with the release latch on top as I look down at it the white wire is on the RIGHT on both.
Now, I plugged it in and all of a sudden DEBUG-LOCOBUFFER monitor started recording activity. This activity has been intermittant. When I experimented with turning off FLOW CONTROL and changing the baud rate and changing the program to look at MS100 the DEBUG-LOCOBUFFER monitor activity stoped. I have tried to return the program to the original settings, but cannot get the locobuffer activity to start again. When I turn the throttle the data led blinks. Evidently, the locobuffer is seeing the DCS100 activity, but is unable to display it in the monitor.
And of course I have never been able to program a decoder.

So maybe you can start by helping me get my cable working properly. Are you familiar with that cable tester? Thanks.

Bill

Hello billroger,

The cable should be straight through, in other words if you hold both
connectors next to each other in the same orientation the wires in each
should appear to be the same.

Bill,
That's ok there are only four LED's on that board. If you look at the
back of the small pc board you will see;
RAIL-
LOCO2
LOCO1
RAIL+
When you plug it in and get four LED's lit it is working ok. It can even be
ok if 3 LED's light. Usually you get three LED's if nothing else is plugged
into the LocoNet and 4 will light if a throttle is plugged in. This is
because in a throttle some of those wires are shorted together which is the
way it should be.

Now, I plugged it in and all of a sudden DEBUG-LOCOBUFFER monitor started
recording activity<
I assumed you plugged in the new cable you just made. This is good.

When I experimented with turning off FLOW CONTROL --sic--<
Remember with each change you must shut down DecoderPro and restart it.

return the program to the original settings, but cannot get the locobuffer
activity<
I have at times had strange things happen by just shutting down
DecoderPro and restarting it as I said above. I now, on occasion, will
reboot the computer. Not sure why I do that and it shouldn't make any
difference but it seems to! Probably a Windows thing.

Perhaps something has gotten confused in the preferences file. If you search for file(s) named "DecoderProConfig.xml" on your system and remove them (while the program isn't running!), when you next start the program it will prompt a preferences window and you can start over.

From your paragraph above, it sounded like you were trying to use the LocoBuffer in "MS100 mode". Is that right?

You've been incredibly patient through all this.

Do you happen to be located in California? If so, maybe I should drop by with some test equipment and try to figure out what's going wrong.

I live in Berkeley, and get around most of Northern California for work. And this weekend I'll be in Anaheim, and could free up a couple hours if you're somewhere in the southern part of the state.
