Getting latest decoder definitions vs. JMRI release vs. Java version
Am I right in believing that latest decoder definitions are available ONLY in the most recent release of JMRI?
Although my PC is no dinosaur, I am told that Java 8 is the latest version it will handle, and that in turn restricts me to JMRI 4.2.6 and, for example, I am unable to get definitions for Digitrax SDH167D; the nearest my JMRI offers is SDH164D.
If there's a way around this, do please tell.

Could you tell us a little bit more about your PC?
Oracle’s Java 11 might not support your PC, but the Java 11 from some other vendors go back quite far: Bob On Jan 8, 2025, at 11:39?AM, Ian W via groups.io <ian@...> wrote:— Bob Jacobsen rgj1927@... |

Phil, That's the one you want to be running right now. It's the recommended version. On Wed, Jan 8, 2025 at 9:50?AM Phil G via <phil=[email protected]> wrote: I'm running Azuls JAVA 17 on Windows 8 if that helps..... --

Just a note to the group.
I am using an older Dell 64bit PC with Win10 and was also limited to Oracles Java8! I just removed Java8 with oracles uninstall and was successful in downloading Azuls JAVA 11 and then loaded JMRI 5.1 Everything worked first try! Now I have a dedicated computer with a large bright display for just running the layout! Thanks to you folks that provided some direction and answers to the group! |

To Bob: I'm running Windows 10 on an Intel i5-8500T @ 2.11 GHz, supported by 16 GB RAM; 64-bit OS, which doesn't seem too shabby to me.
If Java is available from other vendors (I had no idea), and if Phil G is able to run Java 17 on Windows 8 (!), then there's something here to be investigated.
Phil G: exciting! Can you tell us whose Java 17 you're using?
Thanks, guys. |

Peter, thanks for the signposts. I wasn't aware that Java was available from anyone other than Oracle; also the distinction between JRE and JDK is valuable. It appears to be necessary to sign up with Azul to get the download. When I find my lucky rabbit's foot, I'll set about the task.
Thanks, all, for comments.

It's mentioned, with a link, in bold even, with the release notes for each release. You DO read the release notes, right? ?

开云体育You only need to sign up if you want update reminders. I don’t, so I didn’tJust be sure you download the .msi file. ?When it’s downloaded, double click to ?install. Oh and be sure to install ANY existing JAVA first. If in doubt run “Java -version” in a command windows. If JAVA is uninstalled you’ll get an error

Ian, Azul does NOT have a sign up requirement. ?Just click on "Download Now". ?They do offer other services, but you don't need them.
