Seriously, perhaps this could appear at several levels. In the main flow of the text you have something like "used paged unless its not working right, in which case try register or direct", perhaps with a sentence or two about the types of problems you'll encounter if you've got an incompatibilty. There could also be a link to more info, that goes into a little more depth for those who really want to learn more.
