First, you need to ensure that JMRI can control the signals and
listen to the sensors. JMRI is only able to control signals that
JMRI can control, and listen to sensors that JMRI can read.

Several years ago I had managed to get sensors to be read
over my C/MRI nodes, and do some very basic experimentation with
LogixNG. But now I am starting in earnest with builing a new
layout and I would like to be prepared for instllation of proper
sensor, signals and turnouts wiring.
