Well, I don¡¯t know what I did ¡ certainly nothing that I am aware of, but I fired it up twice in the last couple of days and it¡¯s worked fine. Didn¡¯t change anything. I think this computer is just showing me who is boss thanks, Bruce and Mount Airy, Maryland.

When I set up a new Windows 11 computer with JMRI and a Digitrax
PR4, I frequently received "unable to read decoder" errors, even
with a verified COM port.? It was not predictable.? I tried
plugging and unplugging and substituting cables, and at one point
thought I had solved my problem with a different USB cable, only
to have the errors recur.
I came to suspect that the issue is really related to in-computer
interference from some sort of junk commercial programs that came
pre-installed on the new computer, which want to connect to the
Internet when the computer starts, but can't because I am not
turning on the WiFi.
Try getting everything set up and powered before turning on the
computer, and then wait for several minutes before opening JMRI
and trying to read a decoder.??
MIGHT work, but might not.??
Let us know, please.

When I started my new setup on a Win11 machine I had problems
with the USB Com port settings. That is what gave me the same
error and communications issues. You need to verify the USB port
used by JMRI is active and connected to your DCC controller. A
full restart of the command station and PC may also help.
