solved my own problem as follows:
the DCC system name in the "Configure Base Station" table has to be set to 100, then 101 etc. The pins can then be set as required i.e. 100 t0 115 for the first pca 9685. So I have set: system name 100 / pin number 100, system name 101 / pin number 101 etc - this works.

I was doing this move from CMRI to DCC because when servos are programmed to move slowly using pca 9685s using the "delay" command in the arduino code, there is some sort of interference and occasionally servos move randomly without being activated. When leaving them at full switching speed (no delay) there is no interference, but this is rather unrealistic. I will now see if this interference is still present when using DCC-ex command station to operate the servos at a medium to slow speed,
