Did you remove the two jumper blocks on the WiFi shield?? I had what seems to have been the same issue. As soon as I added the ESP8266 WiFi shield to my DCC-EX controller, I could not connect anymore with jmri. The power button status was Unknown.? I also could not upload the code for the DCC-EX station with WiFi if the WiFi shield was installed.

?

Then I went back to read the instructions on the DCC-EX site and discovered that I had to remove the two jumper blocks on the ESP8266 WiFi shield. ??After that I could connect with jmri, and could also upload the code with WiFi enabled.

?

I had Arduino and JRMI working with DCC-EX for several years.? But accidently fried the Arduino last week.? Bought new Arduino Mega, Arduino Motor Shield and Wifi shield.? ?Did auto install of DCC-EX with Wifi option.? On latest version of JMRI.

?

I got power flowing to the track thru the Arduino but JMRI would never say anything except 'Unknown".? ?I did everything I could think of over several hours.? Deleted and reloaded everything more than once.??

!

Changed COM ports and start time delay.? ?No fix.

?

I finally decided to remove the wifi shield.? Presto!!!!!!!? ?Now working.
