PN532, Serial, Uno
Hurrah! Problem now solved. It turned out to be a faulty Uno! I had another Uno I could try and substituted that one. Everything worked perfectly both with the Serial Monitor and in JMRI. All eight Reporters successfully reported the tags.
My apologies to everyone for chasing their tails over this one. I didn't expect the Uno to be faulty and only began to after I had bought two more PN532's and it still didn't work. Blairs suggestion made me look a little closer at the Uno and it appears that it was the culprit.
So, I think we can put that one on the back burner for the moment and concentrate on some of the other sketches.
