JMRI makes a backup of every panel you've ever saved when using the same panel name.? You can find them in a folder called "backupPanels".? Each panel is saved with the backup date and time appended to the name of the panel.
So you can make your own backups by changing the panel name as Ken recommended, or use the same name and let JMRI make a backup for you.
