It only makes sense that you have to select via the roster to get the roster
updated. Many layouts will have some locos where they have the same loco
number. Again, only selecting by that roster entry would you get the right
match. Frequently they have different decoders so the function mapping is
different. Selecting by roster makes it easy to see the right functions for
each loco. Yes the different locos with the same numbers wouldn't be on the
rails at the same time (unless being a 'hard coded' consist) but I know
enough users who have that issue. They are not into changing the decals to
make them different numbers.
