Does this mean I really do not have a connection? or is it due to me not having a panel running?
I am assuming this is in the main PanelPro window. This is the connection status. When the line is red and has ¡°ERROR¡± in the text, this means the connection failed. You see the ¡°ERROR¡± and red text go away because the connection is re-established automatically.
There is probably a reason the connection drops every few minutes. There may be a clue in the logs, but the reason is unlikely to be something we can fix from inside of JMRI ( the cause is probably a network connectivity issue between your two computers )
