Using Steve's RPi-JMRI distro for many months now on a couple of layouts killing power has not caused problems.
A possible warning is if the Pi is doing other things too, not just being Steve's JMRI machine, then there is a possibility that there is disk activity and the ?SD was being written to, then there could be corruption to the drive.
My Pi's are not running as a RR controller but rather as bullet proof WiFi access points where my friends are not opening their home net to strangers. Huge selling point... open house/guest session and the "hey can I use my phone?" Is a sure... server is RPi-JMRI password is rpI-jmri... Love it!
Off topic, sorta... Pi 4 looks to be producing Pi 3 bargains...
