My memory of a previous issue like this is that may be a combination of two circumstances:
1) You have created a new group but not yet added any roster entries to it. (The act of creating it selects it.)
2) The Roster Groups panel has been accidentally collapsed (those little disclosure arrows are not easy to notice.)
