Your "fudge" is as good a method as any. You could add comments in the free-text field to remind you (and others) of the fudge.
An alternative fudge is to use the generic "NMRA" decoder type.
If you have a CV list for the decoder, you could create your own decoder entry for JMRI. Basic decoders (which something back in 1997 will almost certainly be) are not difficult; requires a text editor. Start from an existing decoder file and edit. There is guidance on the JMRI website to get you started.
It is probably impossible for JMRI to cover every decoder in existence. So, a fudge or two will be needed along the way.

Subject: [jmriusers] DecoderPro and old decoders
I am trying to program an old decoder on DecoderPro V4.4. I have an Atlas N scale GP40-2 with a "DA120" decoder. This was pre-installed WAAAAYYY back in 1997 or so. DecoderPro doesn't have it listed, and reading the CV's comes up as Phoenix Sound Systems, Inc. which isn't a defined manufacturer. I can manually search the list, for Atlas or Digitrax, but still come up empty.
I have used this engine on my layout in the past and know it works, but have been updating my roster of usable locomotives on JMRI and want to have correct info. How do I select a decoder that isn't listed? Should I chose the updated version of the decoder (Digitrax DN163A0) and "fudge it"?
Thanks
David
