  1. Chef John is getting sake donations from World Sake Imports and Skurnik Wines; they will deliver the bottles to OKA.
  2. Still trying to procure more raffle items. So far we have Hiro Sake, a Japan Society package that includes a dual membership and tickets to select events, and dinner for two at Sakagura. I'm picking up the Sakagura gift certificate on Monday. If anyone has any others, please let me know. I updated my website to include these as well as the sake donations.
  3. Yuji, Rona Tison from Ito En says that she can arrange for you to pick up the tea donation from their Dumbo warehouse on Wednesday, August 22. Will that work for you? The address information: . Call 718-250-4000 a half an hour before you pick it up. THANK YOU! If this doesn't work for your schedule, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with Rona.
  4. Yuji, were you able to get any donations from JFC?
  5. Yuki, I like the idea of printing a couple of posters. Sorry about the last line about on the flyer. I think I suggested the 's. In my head it reads "the Japanese American Association's Flood Relief Fund," so it doesn't look like a typo to me. Were you able to change it to what you want? ??

I'll keep pushing the event on social media. I'm sure we'll get more ticket sales in the next few days. New Yorkers are very last-minute planners.

If Kim already made the change, then please let’蝉 go with that. I don’t want her to feel as if we wasted her time. I need to ask for logos. I don’t think we’ll get anything from Korin because Saori-san is on a cruise, and communication with her is impossible right now. I’ll try again. I’ll follow up with the others, too. Susan thanks so much for the updates. Excited for all the momentum we have going.?

I sent a request to our Board (through our President, Brenda McKinney) for raffle item donations and will check in on that early?next week. I know Christy Jones (on our Board) has already done an incredible job with Japan Society items! So awesome! I will try and secure some other raffle items in the meantime and will keep you posted.

RE the poster: I've already asked Kim to make the edit, but I'm fine either way. I sent Yuki our JETAANY logo and will send any for companies that can donate additional items.

This is the first collaborative charity effort by several Japanese/JA/Japan-related organizations in NYC, under the umbrella group, JACC, the Japanese American Community Coalition (organizations are listed below), with the support of the Japanese Consulate, and ?will offer tastings of Japanese food and sake.

JAJA in August: USJC with David Kenji Chang and Kazu Gomi

U.S.-Japan Council?will be the topic of discussion hosted by local social networking group JAJA (Japanese Americans, Japanese in America) on August 21. The focus will be on how USJC?has bridged the U.S. and Japan through people-to-people connections and diverse programming,?cultivating?an international network that strengthens the relationship between both countries.?

Guest speakers will be our own?David Kenji Chang and Kazu Gomi, who serve on the Board of Directors of USJC. They'll discuss TOMODACHI, partnerships, and what it means to be involved in an organization that is committed to nurturing the U.S.-Japan relationship.

USJC is generously providing sushi for this event, but feel free to bring a side dish, dessert, or beverage to share with the group.?

Japan Flood Relief Benefit Hosted by JACC

  • Thursday, August 23 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
  • OKA – 439 3rd Avenue (between 30th and 31st?Streets)
  • Admission: $75 early bird until August 16 / $80 from August 17 through August 22 / $85 at the door

The Japanese American Community Coalition, a consortium of New York-based Japanese American service organizations, is hosting a special fundraiser for flood relief efforts in Western Japan, which has been suffering from historic rainfalls, landslides, and an unprecedented heat wave this summer.?This is a collaborative event between many Japanese/Japanese American and Japan-related organizations – Hoshuko Alumni Association, Japanese American Association of New York, JET Alumni Association of New York, Japanese Medical Society of America,?U.S.-Japan Council, NY?Japanese American?Lions Club,?and Japanese American Citizens League-NY – with the support of the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

Japanese-inspired hors d'oeuvres will be provided courtesy of Chef John McCarthy of OKA and premium sake, wine, and beer will be served (included in the price of admission). Guests will also have a chance to win special prizes.?100% of the proceeds raised at this?event will go to JAA’蝉?Japan Flood Relief Fund. JAA, the Japanese American Association of New York, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Kyodo News reports that the torrential rains and landslides that started in early July killed at least 225 area residents and forced more than 3,000 people into evacuation shelters. Your support to those recovering in Japan, especially in the hardest hit areas of Hiroshima, Okayama, and Ehime Prefectures, will be greatly appreciated.

Hope you and your family are doing well and that you've enjoyed a fast-paced summer! ?Mine's been a blur!

I wondered if you and your wife would be interested in attending a fundraiser next Thursday evening (August 23rd) for flood relief efforts in western Japan, and if you could possibly disseminate it on the AAJA listserve? ?This is the first collaborative charity effort by several Japanese/JA/Japan-related organizations in NYC, under the umbrella group, JACC, the Japanese American Community Coalition (organizations are listed below), with the support of the Japanese Consulate, and ?will offer tastings of Japanese food and sake.

Time: next Thursday, August 23rd, from 6:30pm-9:30pm
Location: OKA, 439 Third Avenue (between 30th and 31st Streets)

100% of net proceeds will go to JAA's Japan Flood Relief Fund, which will then be allocated to nonprofits on the ground helping to rebuild the regions most damaged by the record rainfall there this summer, such as the Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime Prefectures. ?JAA, the Japanese American Association, of NY is a nonprofit organization serving the Japanese and Japanese American community in the New York area for over a century:
