I am not sure why you ar having your problem, but when I have made pdfs I
would use a post script print driver and print to file. Then using distiller
I would make a pdf of the .ps file. I have acrobat 3 on my mac and this
seems to work perfectly.

I have Acrobat 4 on my pc and I have been able to print to file on a mac and
copy it over to my pc to make a pdf with 4 and never had a problem.
