Peter, you don't say what OS you are using but I will assume that it is fairly recent. You also don't say if you are or have ever used or experimented with the Home app or HomeKit.

The changes made to System Preferences have confused many people including myself. When I get a new computer I go through the settings and turn off everything that I don't use so I don't remember what is on by default. The System Preferences window has a search box which I need to use since the method of organization there is opaque to me.
In System Preferences
1. go to (click on) the Apple ID setting on the top of the "table of contents"
click on iCloud
under "Apps Using iCloud" click on "Show All"
scroll down the list to find "Home" and, using the slider, turn it off
2. Similarly check this setting
Privacy & Security/Location Services/System Services/HomeKit
3. And..
Notifications (under "Application Notifications") turn off "Home"
?
Of course if you are trying to use HomeKit then the answer is entirely different and I might have eaten lunch instead of writing this.? ;-)

You can have it three ways: - fast,? - accurate or? - cheap.? Pick two, but you can’t have all three.
Same goes for Apple products, you can have:? - the latest features (often just eye candy),? - without new software, adapters or accessories, or - inexpensive. Also, pick two, but you can’t have all three.

Interesting saga with your headphones issues.
I could be wrong, but going back to mini-plugs, lightning, and even USB-C, can't one still plug in wired headphones directly if they are matching jacks and plugs?
There are specific advantages of having wired headphones, so I hope they keep them around.?
I dread the day when Apple decides to eliminate ALL physical ports, for whatever reason, but I hate to say it, I think they want to got he route of bluetooth and wireless charging, and thus could claim no need for any physical ports.?
What are people saying about this, or am I totally off-base?

I bought headphone adapters on Amazon. Offhand I don’t remember what I paid, but it was very inexpensive. The first one was for iPhones before the latest new iPhones and then I re-ordered because I bought an XV iPhone I needed a different adapter. Adapter has ability to hook up the earphone and also has a connect to hook up to the regular computer adapter.
I hope that eventually the headphone adapters will get reinstated into newer phones.
In case you’re interested I also bought a new Roku TV remote which allows me to attach my
Headphone into the remote so I can listen to TV privately.
