Will not power up
Hi all, I have another friend's 7000 here that will not power up. I am not a professional tech. I can diagnose and fix through hole receivers, stereos, AA5 radios etc but these microprocessor?control radios is beyond my capabilities. I can however chase voltages and maybe find where the voltage is lost. I told my friend, "no promises but let me have a look at it. I won't do anything to make it a brick" I just?got the radio and the only thing I've done so far is verify no power up. I did pull off the face and clean the contacts between the face and main radio body. No luck. Still will not power up. I do have 13.7 volts at the power cord but I haven't pulled any covers to check anything inside yet. I know my limitations so with that in mind, does anyone have any ideas that I can check first? I would appreciate any input. Thank you very much. Bob W4JFA |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýCommon problem. ?Is it clicking at all when you plug it in or when you press the power button? ?Could be bad capacitors in the display, bad connection between display and body. ?Those 2 are first thing that comes to mind.On May 16, 2025, at 7:16?PM, Bob via groups.io <W4JFABob@...> wrote:

Geoff, Craig, and all, I hear no click at all. Today (Saturday) I have to work all day so won't get back to it until probably Monday but in the mean time?I'll be doing as much studying as I can. Thanks for the tip on the files section. I'll take a look. So far a couple of youtube videos will be helpful. On my breaks today I'll do some studying and reading. Cross your fingers for me! 73 and thank you, Bob W4JFA On Fri, May 16, 2025 at 7:38?PM Geoff via <vk3zgw=[email protected]> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, ? Open up the control unit and replace the two 100uF caps tants (Black in the middle of the board), they go short circuit, watch out for polarity, ?if there is no click, then the 4R7 resistor is open circuit rear the 8V volt regulator, remove the ribbon cable very very carefully, as if you pull the one off the PA board you will have to strip down the whole radio to fit it back in!! ? Occasionally the -12V BUCK converter needs looking at but that is a 1 in 10. ? I would do it for you But you are in the USA and postage make it impossible. ? KR ? ? Andrew ? Andrew, Thank you very much!!! Does that ribbon cable need to be unplugged to replace those parts? Several months ago I installed a driver board for another friend but I don't remember what it all looks like now. Just so everyone knows, I only do this to help friends. Not for payments. Hi Bob,
While I was trying to get other aspects of my IC-7000 to work, at one point it achieved brick status.? It turned out to be peeled-back line in one of the flat cables that goes between the PA board in the back and the Main board on the top.? I found it by tracing the power supply voltages on the back and front.? One was coming in on pin 7 instead of pin 8.? Reinstalling that flat cable while pushing it against the "pin 1" end brought it back to life.? So...I suggest tracing the power supply voltages, including looking for the 3.3V at one of the pins going to the removeable front panel.? If you need a 28-conductor flat cable lemme know; I have extras now.
Cheers
