A radio similar to the IC-705, but that would use the old style tuner control so that we would not have to swap the accessories out.
Perhaps a tuner built into a remote box. I think that the main unit of the IC-7100 is not so bad, but the control panel is uninspired. If they had just used a little color and had a display output it would have been a great radio.
Replacing a pretty radio with a drab "Upgrade" makes on question the thinking that went into it.
Even upgrading the panel unit of the IC-7100 would be an improvement, but the electronic circuitry in the unit is questionable today as it is very complicated and has a bunch of obsolete parts. Today an SDR would probably be much cheaper and building on the IC705 would make a lot of sense. It would not be that hard to make a main unit with a 100 watt amp and antenna tuner built in (a tuner with a lot more range than 4 :1 would be nice. A simple switching arrangement for QRP for these who wanted to go that way as well.
Personally I find the waterfall and spectrum to be of little use, pretty, but not much value on a small screen. The output to a nice big monitor would be a big plus, however.

I believe the reason for not having an HDMI port is the royalties that must be paid, I believe for each unit manufactured. ? The ICOM’s generally have DVI ports for their displays.? The only manufacturer I know of who went to an HDMI port is Elecraft for their K4. ? ’73 de JIM N2ZZ ? ? ?

As long as we are speculating on new products, here are some thoughts:
For recreational purposes the QRP IC-705 is great and I appreciate ICOM for inventing it. But QRP is not compatible with deployment.
What is the intended use case for the hypothetical IC-7100/7000??
If it is a front-seat vehicle mobile mount then panadapters and such could be considered visually distracting to the driver. Sure, you can pull over to adjust the radio and folks do mount small base rigs for that purpose, but is the display of the IC-705 really suitable for use whilst driving? I wonder about that.?
I think a new rig based on the IC-905 concept that covered HF, 2M and 70cm would be dandy, at 100W, for a deployable or base rig. Not sure about vehicle.
Oh, here's another random neuron-firing: how about a button for "in-motion" (terrible lable, have to figure out something more concise and cool-sounding) that would? remove the panadapter and most of the other information?and make the remaining smaller text items and meters larger. That would make it suitable for driving. When not in-motion, all the great functionality returns.
Same head unit as the 905 (different firmware, of course) and a different RF unit that would be mounted elsewhere in the vehicle connected by modular connectors. Multiple antenna jacks - UHF for HF and 6m, SMA or BNC or UHF for 2m and 70cm with a setting to assign bands (6M, 2M, 70cm, HF) to any. Maybe four antenna connectors? Further to that, be able to assign ham bands within HF to different antenna connectors to break out 80m or 160m to different antennas.? Put the 4 pin tuner jack on the bottom of the RF unit for external tuners and/or put a robust (up to 10:1) tuner in the RF unit. The 3:1 in the IC-7300 just doesn't isn't sufficient.?

Naturally, it would want to be crammed with bluetooth and WiFi and Ethernet and sub-space communications channels, and support a keyboard and mouse wired or wireless, and have an SD or microSD card to record one or both sides of a QSO and load profiles, and support the remote tuning knob (love that thing) via USB, and be an RS-BA1 server, etc.
Perhaps it could have a mini-HDMI to drive an external monitor. Hmmm... if it did, perhaps it could support audio over HDMI as an audio path destination. That would be a nice capability - send audio to headset, external speaker (need two outputs), and HDMI on a band by band basis.

I don't think that the IC7100 is going to last much longer. It has had to be redesigned to be able to source many of the parts that are now obsolete and in the arena of unobtainium.?
That said it also has a number of problems in actual operations in the real world.?
It is very susceptible to voltage surges as the +12 volts is always connected to the pretty fragile voltage regulators that feed the CPU responsible for startup. I have worked on a number of these with this issue.?
What is needed is a better form factor and a more rugged electrical regulator system and protection.?

That way you could then use a PC or tablet in the the passenger compartment for Winlink, FT8 etc., and for an expanded spectrum view once stopped, none of which you should be doing while in motion anyway. ?
Heck, a $60 Evolve Windows 10 laptop which runs on 12VDC could do all of those things today if the 7000 had an internal sound card and usb connector on the control head.?

I was a big fan of my IC-7000 and when the IC-7100 came out I was unimpressed with the wedge control head.? Fast forward a few years and I am looking for a new mobile rig having repurposed the IC-7000 and I give the IC-7100 a second look.? Boy
was I dumb for not grabbing one of these wonderful rigs earlier!
I think it was my acquisition of an IC-7300 and its? interfacing that broke the ice.? Interfacing the 7300 was so similar to the 7100 and then I mounted the IC-7100's control head on a flexible arm.? That simple and big display sealed the deal!? Now the IC-7000
is long gone and I move the IC-7100 between a go kit and my mobile with ease.? I have the original factory remote head cable permanently installed in the truck and when I use the go kit in a self-contained mode, I use a short shielded CAT 7 cable that cost
a few dollars.??
If I did more driving, I would be inclined to buy another IC-7100, but my guess is that ICOM will be introducing an IC-7100 replacement in the next couple of years.? In the meantime, an IC-705 and an autotuning HF amplifier and antenna tuner might be in my
future.? It will depend on what road the IC-905 takes me down the budget road!
One last thing... I use one of several Evolve III laptops with one of my IC-7300s every day - usually on 40m or 80m FT or Winlink.? So if you see me pounding away QRO on 6m with my Flexradio and amplifier, take a look on HF as I'm likely to be pounding away
on HF with about 50W with the smaller setup at the same time.? Shortly, I am going to switch this over to the IC-7100 so that I can use the IC-7300 for casual tuning around.

I to really liked my 7000 mobile. That with a screwdriver antenna and I could work just about anywhere. With the control head mounted on a flexible shaft and mounted to a seat bolt I could use the arm rest and have my hand right on the tuning knob so no fatigue. It was a lot more fun than operating at home, anybody can do that.
