The RT System software is made for the 7k and it only works with its own cable. Don't know why. I have not found any software that works as well. You may be able to make a cable yourself but RT won't like it. It makes life so much better. Worth the price.

I asked this question about the interface cable because they are selling the program separate, without a cable. Better yet for non US OPs, it can be bought as a digital download. (no shipping, customs etc.) Having to buy the program with a cable, the cost goes up fast with shipping and customs charges.? RT systems sells their software for the IC-7100 separate, without
the cable (digital download) In this case, they say it it will work with the
USB cable supplied with the radio. This will exellent and is a good
buy considering all the D-Star stuff it can also handle..
Their software it is protect in that it requires a serial number or some form of activation, as far as I know. Were
not talking about stealing the program, only discussing the cable to
connect the radio to computer. Protecting their interests is one thing but forcing you buy a cable when
they could have used a standard CIV cable, that's another thing. The
connection to the radio has to be Icom CIV, so what else have they changed so
you need their cable??
Also, you can back up the CD (for your on archival use) but you may require a special program. The same kinds of programs are used to back up game CDs..

If I remember correctly they do have instructions on how to make a copy
of the CD version of the software onto another CD so you have a backup.
Not sure how that works if you only have the download and did not get it
on CD.

I really didn't quite understand why they tied the cable to the software like that.Still makes it a little difficult when their cable, a Prolific, decides not to work with Windows or vice versa. Mine keeps coming up as "device not recognized, a USB device has malfunctioned blah blah etc". Perhaps it is the cable itself. Maybe it was fixed in a recent update, as I haven't seen this lately.

This is why they? have lost so many sales. restricting software to special this? special that, etc. only drives customers away. myself, if it doesn't use a universal cable, i won't buy it. it is bad enough to have to buy a couple cables, let alone 20 to 50 cables for different radios to program, then controller cables, etc.

lot of cables, this way in case of emergency, i can grab a couple cables tops and do everything i need to do.
? also, laptops only have a couple USB's. and when you have to load a ton of different drivers for all those different special cables your limited RAM memory runs out fast, just with an operating system chews up enough memeory, let alone add more on top, like drivers for all those cables. which on my laptop. i can only run 3 max at a time, one is always used by my mouse. many times i have a cell phone in another. so that gives me
one free USB for rig control, one for digital modes, etc. not much room..
? The phone aside, one port is for HF rig control and HF digi-modes, the other port is for VHF/UHF rig control and digi-modes. only 2 cables for 2 rgs. why should i need to add more cables?

How can it use a universal cable when the radios use different connections to program them? Speaker Jack on the 8000 and 7000 the VX-8DR uses the external mic/gps connecter etc.. I did not say the price of their software was unreasonable, but a bit expensive, since you have to buy the cable too. I have learned that in the software game, there is no reasoning for price. Also, please do not try and school me on Capitalism. Talk to The Pope.
That said, their software works as advertized, and works well. There is other software out there that is freeware or GNU and is not tied to a cable or chip. Some may work as well, I do not know. They may have a warning on their website about this incompatibility, but on websites of their sellers, there is no warning; you get the software, and it will not install or start due to the wrong cable. Then you have to go back and buy the cable, incurring more s&h charges. Many Hams like to build their own cables, and often cables (FTDI chip) can be bought off Ebay for peanuts, and FTDI chip cables are the cable everybody says to buy, not Prolific, which is the chip RT uses.
Just annoyances, and for the price, not too bad a deal. I have the software (and cables, *sigh*) for every radio in my home, an FT-950, an FT-7100M, an IC-7K, a VX-6 and VX-7. Having spent over $200.00, I feel I have a small right to gripe, I think.

? Mine all use the same cable, IC-v8000, IC-7000 etc. yes for portables i have different cables, tho mostly one time programming as needed. not operations of digital modes.
???? when i was in chicago, i was able to operate all of my stations radio remotely. not what one can do if you have to change cables.
and like others have said. many cables are very cheap to buy. works for most other software. just install that cables driver and your good to go.
