A Recap...

Clint Bradford

Let's review what's occurred since February...Remember the French
magazine that "broke" the news? It is quoted verbatim below...with
editorial comments inbetween the dashes.

ICOM IC-7000
Source: Megahertz Magazine, No. 263, Feb. 2005, p. 10.
It is under this designation that the successor to the IC-706MKIIG
has been announced.

-----------------------------------------
No - this new model is not replacing anything.
-----------------------------------------

We should know some more soon, since it will be available in the
second quarter of 2005...

-----------------------------------------
Yeah, right.
-----------------------------------------

...according to information supplied by ICOM France.

-----------------------------------------
Of course, "Icom France" isn;t responsible for R&D nor bringing
anything to market.
-----------------------------------------

The sketch, derived from CAD, shows a rather unusual attractiveness;
if anything, it is somewhat revolutionary! Here we see for the first
time the colour screen as adapted to a multi-band transceiver with
detachable control head.

-----------------------------------------
Seems to be fairly accurate!
-----------------------------------------

Here are the main characteristics as announced:

The rig will be equipped with IF-DSP, which will control Twin PBT
and Noise Reduction (NR) features, an inheritance from more
sophisticated models (IC-756ProIII, IC-7400 etc.) The IC-7000 will
not require or accept optional filters.

-----------------------------------------
Today's pre-release Icom info looks promising in this area!
-----------------------------------------

Approx. 35W UHF power output.

-----------------------------------------
Yep - according to preliminary information!
-----------------------------------------

A 5 cm TFT colour screen.
Very high frequency stability (0.5 ppm).
508 memory channels.

-----------------------------------------
Nope - only 503 (grin).
-----------------------------------------

Multi-function scanning.
Built-in voice recorder and clock.
Completely updated control-panel design, approaching that of "base"
stations.
Free-rotating or detented tuning control.
Case 20 mm shorter than IC-706.
Generously-sized, backlit keys.
10-key hand microphone supplied.
Detachable control head.

The other characteristics are those of the IC-706MKIIG.

It goes without saying that we are waiting with eager anticipation!
Perhaps this new radio will be your travelling companion for your
next vacation trip?

Anyone know if it has a real time bandscope and what the 'four in a row' plugs
are in the rear? One no doubt is speaker out, one amp relay? CI-V...?

Those are for the surround sound output. :-)

One may be a FSK input like the 706 has - the brochure did mention that
it has RTTY mode.

It also mentioned a PSK31 mode, so perhaps there is also audio in/out
for that mode? That could be done with only one stereo jack, since only
mono audio is required.

So - CI-V, speaker, FSK, PSK31?

The bandscope is real-time. It also has two modes (center and fix)
just like the IC-7800 and ProIII.

The 4 mini jacks on the back are speaker, RTTY, CI-V and Video Out.

Clint,
So you are believing the ICOM people that would not even confirm the
existance of the IC-7000 until Friday?
Not me!

All:
I had a nice chat with one of the ICOM guys about the one thing that
depresses me most about all of the all-band mobile rigs...you can't
monitor/scan UHF/UHF while operating HF. He said that would (of course)
constitute dual-VFO, which he said they talked about but did not
impliment.
The reason I bring this up is that my last vehicle I had both an FT-100
and an FT-8100 with antennas for all bands on both. Managing a few
repeaters I really need to monitor VHF/UHF whill operating. It's also very
helpful for traveling. So, my options are to either have another VHF/UHF
radio or a scanner in the vehicle. Would be nice just to have one.
So now that we have some specifics, and now that we know they haven't
released the radio yet, perhaps we can assemble a list of last requests
for the final product.

1) Dual VFO with ability to scan VHF/UHF while operating HF (even if
that means a somewhat crippled receiver for monitoring).

2) ?

VIDEO OUT, YEAH!!! Just as I asked for ;)
I'm sold if it sends ALL screen modes to video and not just TV??? Would make it
usable as a 'real' base radio. Video out will go straight into my LCD monitor
(has video-in jack)! HRD should be great also although no real time scope in the
software. A little skeptical of the real time scope resolution judging from one
of the Dayton photos. It will be interesting to hear some reviews of it's use
when available.

Chuck,

You would need a dual receiver (main plus vhf) as well as a dual VFO.
Check out the Kenwoork TS-2000.

Or to a mobile "head's up display".

Mike:
Yes, if I can get over my Kenwood-Phobia and the sticker shock of a
TS-B2000 and RC-2000 mobile controller, that would be an option to
consider.

Or more likely a "back-up" monitor. - Chuck

Sometime after the T-Shirt bombing by Icom.
(Shooting IC-7000 Shirts from the bleachers)
I was standing next to the 7000, and I heard someone from Icom say that the unit has a TV Receiver built in.
So I understand that the display will show TV, as well as the input for a camera, player, etc..

Yup. It's video in. I see the Universal Radio site states this
too. At this point, the solution to video in would be a $24.95
Radio Shack RF Modulator.

Sorry about the typo in this last post. I distictly saw Video Out
(not Video In) on the placard on the bottom of the rig. I can only
blame too many hours flying from Dayton and some jetlag.

I'm anxious to try hooking it to one of those 7" TFT flat screens
for a cool little heads up display. Someone told me they picked one
up in Dayton for $169. I'm not sure I can justify an in-dash DVD
player with the screen.
