I have done this many times with my IC7000 by following the manual for the Signal Link USB and manual for WSJT-X.? First of all, I purchased the IC-7000/FT-817 jumper module SLMMOD6PM for the Signal

Low TX Audio
After an RF feedback event, my IC7000 has very low TX audio. The TX power meter barely moves when speaking into the microphone in SSB mode, and on FM, the deviation is only 1 kHz. The MIC Gain setting

Re: IC 7000
If you can use a power supply 25A continuous or larger. The 7K is sensitive
to voltage drops.

Re: CHIRP
That's probably best, and Chirp may work for you using the rt cable.
Some usb/rs232 cables used a cloned chip set that is not compatible with
current drivers, and windows hates old drivers.

Re: CHIRP
Been thru all of that. Was able to read radio 1 time out of 50 tries. Edited my file to add some stuff an now cannot write back to radio.
Wife spent the 50$ to buy the RT Systems software and cable.
