True Blue mini-Ginnis
I cannot help being reminded of this term I learned about a while back: TBmG(True Blue mini-Ginnis). I watched the replay of the Jim Cramer interview of Ginni Rometty on his Mad Money show a couple of days ago. Behind them was a room filled with TBmGs. Of course Ginni did not call them that. She called them "New Collar Skills of the Future." ? She also said "50% of IBM is millennials that are here." ? She further explained: "So you change the design thinking, you-- put them on ag...ile, which is co-location. Change the tools. Multidisciplinary. Minimum viable products. Small teams. And then you give them contemporary tools, co-location. So that's what you're seeing here. And, boy, we've been at that. We've done this to workspaces in 300 places around the world." ? Her final words of wisdom: "This IBM will change the world one more time." ? Disclaimer: I am not a millennial nor a New Collar Skill nor a TBmG. |
Yahoo No Longer Provides Support for Yahoo Groups
Yahoo confirmed that they no longer provide support for Yahoo Groups. A comment was posted by a Yahoo Customer Care representative that makes this point clear:
“Customer Care no longer provides support for Groups (at all) and that extends to the community since 'they' aren't providing the resources needed to make that a supportable forum. Our team is only 7 people and the company's focus is Mail and Sports.” Posted by ADMIN EchoSanders 2/27/17 10:56AM ? |

Tax Levy For IBM’s Decade of Employee Offshoring?
Copy of message first posted on
“I am asking that this message get posted anonymously in as many forums as possible. I have read this morning that Donald Trump plans to impose a 35 percent tax on companies that cut American jobs and then relocate these jobs in other countries. Trump has been critical of IBM for laying off 500 workers in Minneapolis and moving their jobs to India and other countries. Trump may not be aware that IBM has been doing this for over a decade. I know many people who were laid off with a severance package that required them to first train replacements from India how to do their job. I have read that this approach was used in hundreds of cases in many US locations. Many people have stated this in the IBM Yahoo groups for many years. What about all of these past firings? Will there be some tax levied against IBM or some payment to the fired employees for this practice used over the last decade? I hope so…”

Due to issues with very large volumes of spam, the groups.io organization made a change to their policies. Effective on October 7, new members are moderated and will be unmoderated after 1 approved message. What this means is that the first time a new member posts to this group, a moderator will have to approve that post. Judge tosses suits over IBM sale to GlobalFoundries
By Larry Rulison Updated 9:18?am, Thursday, September 8, 2016
MALTA — IBM won a major legal victory Wednesday when a federal judge tossed two lawsuits that claimed the company botched its 2015 sale of its computer chip business to . The sale, in which IBM paid GlobalFoundries $1.5 billion to take over its failing microelectronics manufacturing unit, helped to boslter the size and manufacturing prowess of GlobalFoundries, which employs 3,000 people at its Fab 8 computer chip factory in Saratoga County. But the lawsuit alleged that for many years, IBM executives had concealed from view just how much money its chip business was losing and had overstated its value in regulatory filings up until its October 2014 announcement that it had struck a deal with GlobalFoundries to take over the business as well as its two chip "fabs" in East Fishkill in Dutchess County and Essex Junction, Vt. IBM ended up writing off billions of dollars from the sale, even though it had previously valued the business at $2.4 billion. Shares of IBM fell nearly 20 percent on Oct. 20, 2014, the day that the sale to GlobalFondries was announced. The lawsuits had been brought by current and former IBMers and a union pension fund in U.S. District Court in Manhattan claiming that the drop in IBM stock hurt retirement funds that held IBM stock. GlobalFoundries ended up hiring hundreds of former IBMers as part of the deal, especially top engineers with knowledge of IBM's manufacturing process. IBM still has a large employee base at in Albany, where IBM is still involved in cutting edge chip research. As part of the sale, IBM signed a 10 year manufacturing contract with GlobalFoundries to make the chips it had previously been making in East Fishkill and Vermont. The sale was key to efforts by IBM to boost its profits. The IBM chip business lost $700 million in 2013 and similar results were expected in 2014 when the sale was announced. The lawsuits reveal that GlobalFoundries was not the only company that IBM had approached for the deal. were also courted, according to one of the suits. |
Re: Beta end?
Here is a response from Mark Fletcher: I
don't have a hard date yet, but my guess is it'll be in September.
That'll mark 2 years of being in beta, which I think is long enough.
:-)? The biggest remaining item is the
Enterprise version, which I hope to finish soon. When we leave beta,
I'll probably change the name of this group. And I will turn on
recurring payments (right now, if you sign up for a premium plan, you're
only charged the initial $10, even if the plan has a recurring monthly
charge). But really, not much will change in terms of how I or the
service work. Cheers, Mark |
Beta end?
I posted the following message on the beta group awaiting approval by the moderators: “I have been following this group for quite a while but just joined so I could ask a question. Is there a projection for when the beta period for groups.io will end? I believe there are quite a few Yahoo users who are planning to move their activity here but who are waiting for the time when groups.io is out of beta test." I am curious to know how many members here are Yahoo users who are
planning to move their activity here but who are waiting for the time
when groups.io is out of beta test. |

IBM Rolls Out New Job-Cutting Plan In The Netherlands
According to a leaked company memo, IBM is imposing involuntary job cuts in the Netherlands for the first time. Does the move serve as a template for Big Blue to impose forced layoffs in regions where local labor laws have made it difficult to impose mandatory cuts?
IBM issued a company memo this week stating it would institute involuntary job cuts for the first time in the Netherlands, adopting a new and permanent workforce reduction strategy in the region. The effects could be far reaching.
Lee Conrad, a former IBM employee who oversees?Watching IBM, a Facebook page that tracks Big Blue's workforce cuts, told InformationWeek the move may serve as a template?for Big Blue to impose? in regions where local labor laws have made it difficult to impose mandatory cuts. IBM Netherlands, for example, previously was only subject to voluntary job cuts, according to Conrad.
"In many of the European countries, the cuts historically have been voluntary. This is because of the existence of works councils and unions inside IBM. Labor laws are also more favorable to workers," said Conrad, who previously oversaw the now defunct union organizing effort called Alliance@IBM.
He added IBM's effort to spread this practice across Europe and other regions will likely increase.
"IBM wants to rid itself of more employees than will volunteer to leave," Conrad said in our interview. "IBM also wants to terminate workers in selective areas and not rely on volunteers. IBM is also shedding business units in countries like Germany and Italy and either selling them to other companies or moving them to low-cost countries like India or countries in Eastern Europe."
An IBM spokesman, while not specifically addressing the job cuts in the Netherlands, told InformationWeek, "As reported earlier this year, IBM is transforming its business to lead in a . To this end, IBM currently has more than 25,000 open positions, many in these key skills areas. If IBM meets its hiring goals, we expect to end the year with around the same number of employees [as] at (year-end) 2015."
IBM had 377,757 employees at the end of 2015, according to its with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That is down from the 379,592 employees it had in 2014, according to its SEC filing.
