This PCB Microscope looks good, I think.

I am studying this one:

I can get the LED Light:

And a 0.5 Barlow lens:

For about $375 total. And I can add a USB camera later if I want. Any reason not to buy this setup?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

This model has the little lever next to the left eyepiece. When using the camera, you'll need to flip the lever to the camera losing viewing with your left eye. Also you'll need a .5 Barlow lens, 2x that comes with it will be too much magnification.

Sounds perfect, but even with the .5 Barlow lens you may still sometimes want less.
I usually solder with x4 and then flip to x8 for inspection as needed.

But you can always get another lens or eyepieces later, the question you need to answer _now_ is if you want zoom.
None of my microscopes have that - but I'm hearing mostly good things, and one of these days I think I'm going to pick up a nice used Zeiss or Leica MZ to play with.

I ended up calling the support people at AmScope and told them what I needed /wanted and ended up buying this one:

I also ordered the LED light ring.
I think I will be happy with the purchase.
Thanks

I ordered this one and a LED ring. They also make a 0.25 lens if I ever need it.

Thanks,
Dave

That looks good.? You'll want a PC board holder of some sort.? I used some 20mm square frame material, and fabricated (using an existing holder I had), a flat board holder that adjusts for boards.? You could use part of the panavise setup, but you want to make sure that the board can't tilt, which will mandate a firm support.

I have a Panavise and a few other board holders. But I just bought some Blu Tack as I watched a video where a guy uses it to hold his pcb's from moving. Haven't tried it yet but it looks promising. I could make a pcb board holder with the plastic printer I guess. Sometimes I forget all the stuff you can make with the 3d printer.

?I find even with a high power magnifier I sometimes miss shorts.
So when I design the PCB I put a row of vias alongside the IC so I can buzz the pins out for shorts.
?
?
?

Now that is _nice_.

If they can offer all that for $500 I think I should reconsider my plan to look out for a used Zeiss or Leica with zoom.

You'll be very happy with this scope.?

Now I wonder if you can put it together with the focus slide reversed, like that:
<>
Well, a bit nicer than that obviously, but you get the idea.

This way nothing would stick down needlessly below the objective.?
I mean 8" WD is great anyway, but why obstruct the working space below when above there is just air?

With the Mantis I find myself bumping into the x8 lens quite a bit while using the (shorter) x4 magnification.
I've even put an extender on the x4 to increase?the working distance, which makes them more similar in length, but still it's annoying sometimes to have that other lens in the way when it is not even in use.

Dunno if there is any bias in the slide to make it self lock against the weight of the head, but then I think it's still odd they designed it like that.

It helped to ask all the right questions based on my limited research before I talked to tech/customer service. I can always add a digital camera later and it will see the same view as the scope too. I think it should be all I need or maybe another lens if necessary. And zoom to boot! :)

I don't know about that but you can download the manual pdf from their site.

https://www.amscope.com/download

SM-3_Manual_151001 is the closest I could find to match the one I bought.

Well it doesn't say that you can't ;-)
The rack just seems to have a friction adjustment.

Really bothers me that they would introduce what is a systematic weakness in the Mantis to something that doesn't need to have it.
If you have a flat object it doesn't matter, but there's always?crap sticking out of electronics, like heatsinks and whatnot.
Also you want the ability to tilt your board in all directions so you are looking sideways at solder joints around a QFN and stuff, quite often I can't tell for sure if a joint is good just from a top view alone.
?
I dunno, maybe with 8" WD it's a non-issue.

WD greatly depends on magnification. When it's on the higher side a mm of movement is enough to throw things out of focus.?

Stefan,

? If you look at that site where I bought mi scope, they have a lot more to choose from and much more expensive too. Maybe you can find what you need. They have FREE SHIPPING but from what I remember you are not in the states so that may not be any help but it's worth a phone call.
