OT: Anodizing aluminium ...

I have made a box for a pcb I have created that needs screening but the plain aluminium look is a bit boring and prone to scratching.

A friend suggested anodizing as it toughens the surface and he had heard that they can then be coloured with die.

I am intrigued and would like to give it a try but has anyone any experience of doing this or can point me in the right direction ???

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Check Caswell first: ? to get an idea of whats involved and the cost. Then check youtube for some other cheaper methods: ?

You may want to just spray paint it. :)

You tube. Lots of stuff. You will need power sulfuric acid and? I believe lead.

Cant buy sulphuric acid in the UK now - been told that sodium bisulfate solution is almost as good.

Why on earth can't you buy sulphuric acid in the UK?

Doug?

Did you mean NaOH? I don't know of a process using NaH.

Snork!

A knee jerk reaction to some acid attacks. You need a license to purchase over 15% concentration unless it is in a battery. You can get up to 2 years in jail for possessing or selling the stuff without a license.
To get a license you have to pay (of course), get a doctor's report and have a clean record with the police.? If you have had any mental illness or depression in the last 10 years forget about getting a license.

Because idiots kept on throwing it into people’s faces. It was happening roughly twice per day in 2016/7 according to wiki.

Steven,
? That's good info. Never looked into it much but that makes it a bit easier. Besides, I already have the sodium hydroxide as we used to make soap as a hobby/business years ago.

I don't think NaOH would work - some people use it to etch the aluminium prior to anodizing (gives a better finish seemingly)? but you need an acid for the actual anodizing.

I'm told that sodium bisulfate behaves like sulphuric acid when in solution under electrolysis.

I have no experience at all in this, I am NO chemist (well just what I remember from "O Level" chemistry way back in 1964 !!).

Did you click on the links? NaOH is just part of the process.

NaOH (Sodium hydroxide aka lye aka drain cleaner) is mainly used to degrease the part, gets that last bit of crap off.

?

It’ll strip the oxide layer off as well, and giving the part a slight etch probably isn’t a bad idea.? It’ll eat the part completely if left in too long – try it with a drink can.? You wind up with the plastic layer.

the sodium hydroxide is both a surface cleaner and acts as an electrolytic cavitator in the process.
It's etching lightly the surface & initiating a network of pores within the terminal (hardened) layer of the aluminum which will accept the pigments uniformly.
A critical detail, is only some aluminums are receptive of anodizing.
My preferences are 6061, 6063 & 5052 grades.
