Re: [hammond_zone] Suggestions for a New Hammond
Yes, forget the presets just drawbars and percussion. A 'solid' stand would

And make sure they can solder drawbar wires and tinker with Leslie motors too. I mean, while we're talkin' perfect world, right? We actually have the technology for this!...and it's probably cheaper too! Keep it spinnin', Jimmy zakemo@... wrote: If I designed the XB-2; |
Re: [hammond_zone] Suggestions for a New Hammond
Peter Crowe
I thing the new 'Hammond' you describe already exists in the form of the new Korg CX3. I bought one a few weeks ago after much deliberation and comparing it to the competition and it really is great. Being able to edit the virtually modelled tone wheel sound, warts and all, means it can not only replicate a C3/B3 but many different ones of varying ages. It can also replicate later and cleaner Hammonds. The keyboard action is terrific, it being very fast. The Leslie simulation is absolutly brilliant and again you can by careful editing of speeds and tone duplicate the sound from many types of cabinet. I own a Leslie 145 and it can achieve a perfect copy of that. Being able to get that distorted amplifier sound (if thats what you like) at low volumes makes it very house friendly. It would have been nice to have been able to connect the CX3 to a real Leslie but no socket is provided. I notice that most manufactures that do supply a socket on these types of keyboard go for the 11 pin type. My 145 only has 9 pins?!. Still, as I said the leslie simulation is so good I havent as yet felt the need to connect it to my cabinet
It has the two sets of drawbars that most peaople are looking for and I have linked a second Midi keyboard to the CX3 to achieve the second manual without problem. Unfortunately there are no separate pedal drawbars so the midi pedals that I have attached (Roland PK-5) play the lower octave of the lower manual, Ok but not the best. Maybe Korg will provide some pedal voicing with a software update. I would certainly recommend the new CX3 to anybody looking for a light weight Hammond clone. It even comes with an expression pedal, they normally try to squeeze us for extra cash for those things. Get down to your local shop and try one but dont forget to haggle on price if you like it and want to buy. I manages to get 25% discount off the retail price at my local store (in the UK) which makes the rather high asking price much more acceptable. Note - If you decide to use midi pedals with this type of keyboard dont get the usual X type stand. You wont be able to position the pedals correctly, I fell down that hole! Take care all Peter (No, I dont work for Korg!) From: jwagner_pa@... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at |
Re: [hammond_zone] back from hols...new Hammond products etc..etc
Darren,
Thanks for forwarding our suggestions to Hammond-Suzuki. I also recommend mounting the Preset/DB LED on a 45 degree angle (use a triangular prism). This will allow the player to see the Preset Names and DB settings when the XK-2 is stacked on top of another keyboard. Also, I wonder if they can improve the Vibrato/Chorus. It's fair, but it doesn't quite capture the depth and breath of the Beast. It will be interesting to see if they offer a software upgrade. Thanks and welcome back, The Hittman |
Re: [hammond_zone] Suggestions for a New Hammond
If I designed the XB-2;
Two sets of drawbars, one for each side of the split. Leave off the MIDI shit, to many buttons, I'm used to using the drawbars in real time anyway. I mean come on, 64+ presets? This would also make the keyboard more affordable. And the stuff jwagner said. Design a fold up stand (plywood maybe?) that resembles a C3 cab. Saw one on a recent Jethro Tull special. Looked to be able to hold two or three portables. God, how I miss sitting behind something more substantial than one of those X type portable stands! Posturing I suppose but I bet I'm not the only one who feels that way. OHF BOB PS How about instead of making organ clones they could sell human roadie clones so we could all keep and use the real stuff. G. Orwell |

Thats why I was asking if anyone would mind if I posted them:) I thought about putting some from the "dictionary of Hammond Organ stops" by Stevens Irwin (Bills brother I guess?)but I presume not many of us need to know how to re-create a Baroque Diapason 8' these days? by the way its 00 7845 234 if your interested...lol Darren --- In hammond_zone@y..., jwagner_pa@y... wrote:

oops..Re: back from hols...new Hammond products etc..etc
bah I got XB3 on the brain; I said:
"It was indeed an XB3 transplanted into an F2000 cabinet after both of them reached the end of their useful life" stupid me..I meant X5 of course...sorry. Just glad I saw it before anyone had a chance to make a remark on the useful life of an XB3...lol Darren |
back from hols...new Hammond products etc..etc
hi everyone
back after my travels now. Had an extra week on the Cornish coast, rather a bonus; had to see a guy with an XB3 who had some...lets say.."cabinet problems". Welcome to all you new people to the list...there were loads of you! I had an interesting chat with Jay Darlington from Kula Shaker the other day. Did you know every recording was made on an XB3? I didn't know that...pity they packed up. Jay is working in a warehouse now...we are being deprived of a great player there. I saw the message about ideas for improvements to the XK2. The split vibrato would have been a great idea. I would like to know if its possible to add that or if its to late...I'll keep you posted. Oh yes...someone recognised the hammond photo I posted three weeks ago..it was a bit of a red herring sorry...lol It was indeed an XB3 transplanted into an F2000 cabinet after both of them reached the end of their useful life. The X5 was well tattered but electronically sound with like new drawabs and keybeds. The F2000...well lets just say it has gone to a better place:) Any suggestions for a good multi channel amp for my transplanted X5? I retro fitted it with MIDI, and just cant get the right sound. It has to be internal...two or three channel (one for organ, one for MIDI instrument) I fitted a single rotor internal Leslie from a T500 so it can be used stand alone, but it retains its 9 pin output so still works with my 900 Leslie...but thats MASSIVE and not the greatest Leslie ever made. Going back to the XK2, if anyone has any suggestion there is a major R&D meeting in Japan this month. Representitives from each of the Hammond Offices will be going to discuss the way Hammond will move from here. So if you have any ideas, I can forward them for you, believe me the powers that be are all to eager to listen...thats how every modern Hammond product is born. The Japanese are great at making things...but their market research leaves a little to be desired...so tell em what you want next! (please no "why cant Hammond make a tonewheel organ?" ..hehe) I dont want you to think I am turning this into a Hammond Suzuki message board...its my own personal idea for us to swap ideas, advice and generally have a bit of fun..as was most of hammond-organ.com, (which is well overdue for some changes I know!!) But I thought you might like to have a chance to make some noises:) Darren |
Re: [hammond_zone] Song suggestions?
Thanks Michael, Good to hear from you. I'll have to see if I can track down
that CD here in Australia, It'd be great to get one, as he was fantastic. I 've quite often inquired about his music, but not many people here have even heard of him, which is a great shame. Thanks again. |
