2 octaves for 1
Ron Newman
I've noticed that the 16' and 8' drawbars on my B4 (Native Instruments) seem
to be a pure sine waves but they have various other lower octaves mixed in with each note. Different notes have different octaves mixed in, some 2 octaves below, some 3. Is that normal for a real Hammond? Ron. |

During time I have had and played many different Hammond organs. Each and every one of them having its very own personallity. Everybody talks about the B3 as being the ultimate Hammond, but I am not one of them. For me the B3 is a great organ, but by fare the only one within the Hammond family.

I know what you mean regarding the cabinet and the feeling. There is something special to it, especially put next to a XK2 or XB1. No doubt. But then again these two junior models are not supposed to replace the B3 or for that matter the XB3. They only help you being mobile and saves you back! They represent a compromise in that respect, and as such they do a great job. I know I have played some places where I am happy to be alive due to the XK2 as in fact I could not have managed to have had the B moved into these small rooms and up and down the stairs. B3 is a representative for what Hammond made back in the mid ?50s. But looking for the authentic Hammond you have to go back to the beginning, and here you find a different sound. The discussion can go on and on, becourse different sound also relate to different music, I know. Main point for me is though that I do not appriciate the fanatic B3 attitude, it kind of limits the idea and the music as intended by Hammond in the first place. Hammond Porta B and Leslie 760
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi everybody,
?
Last week I did a recording in a small private studio in my
neighbourhood... As a dedicated Hammond player a was?surprised because of
the Hammond¡§PortaB standing there, together with two Lesie's a 760 and antoher
one (don't know the number, but it also was a solid state) I?couldn't wait
to hear that organ, but when I did,?it was not as cool as I
thought...?The Leslie had a lot of ground noise,?there was an awful
lot of mechanical?noise... and the typical Leslie sound characteristics
where lacking...
?
Anyway, what I wanted to say?is that a good Leslie is in
many cases the first concern for a?pleasing Hammond sound.?When I hear
my setup on recordings (X5 solid state Hammond through a?Leslie-clone with
a tube amp) it?has a lot more?of?roarin' and screamin' than a
real solid state Leslie...?
?
greetz!

If the Drawbar sound of the 16? by playing note by note down the keyboard in the lower keyboard start to repeat itself from the above octave, then you are onto the foldback issue.

This is normal, and on some Hammonds you will also find that the 1?drawbar does the same in the upper end. I assume this is correct though I am a bit confused on the 3 octaves below mentioned. This is not normal. It is often a mistake made by non-hammond clones and is often forgotten when people try to sample the Hammond sound. -----Oprindelig meddelelse----- Fra: kcbass1@... <kcbass1@...> Til: hammond_zone@... <hammond_zone@...> Dato: 29. maj 2001 20:23 Emne: Re: [hammond_zone] 2 octaves for 1 I think this is normal, something called foldback. Re: [hammond_zone] Hammonds future
Dear Lars,
I don`t think Hammond will ever die. Its sound fits in too many places for it to ever be replaced. I`m a newbie to keyboards but I can tell a clone from the real thing even when I can`t tell you what chord is being played. I don`t think me and my XK2 are gonna be together for long. Its something about sitting behind that big hunk of wood and playing Gods music that makes me and angels cheer. Somebody else said in another post, Having a Hammond is a love affair. I`m gonna have me a real B3 soon and a house to go with it. My XK2 will be gathering dust! Casey P.S. I`m also an electronic technician. I`m gonna start repairing Hammonds, too. |
Re: [hammond_zone] both Hammond oftriumph and tragedy
Marc and all: Your story reminds me of the first Hammond I got was a C-3 and I was living in and upstairs apartment. I just about drove the lady under me batty. I ended up selling the organ when I got married to buy a car boy do I miss it. I did pick up a cheap spinet 100 series and hooked a leslie up to it so I still had the sound. Then ended up selling both later to get a keyboard WS-2 by Bachmann(General music) I have had lots of fun with the keyboard but I sure so miss my hammond. I did still get to play one at church it was a C-3 with leslie. But I just changed churchs and now I'm hammondless again!!!! But I alway's keep my eyes open for one. Sam

Hammonds future
Lars Karstensen - Infinity Trading ApS
It is understandable that we all love the old Hammonds and what goes with them. For me Hammond is more than just having and playing an organ, it has become a lifestyle. I do no longer have to play the organ to know what it is all about. Just the simple fact that it is there and I could do so, if I needed, is satisfying.
But what about the future? Next to my old Hammonds and related hammond stuff I also have some of the new ones, and I do like them. No matter what you say about "the old original stuff". The best and most powerfull hammond I ever played was the CX-2000, a Hammond from around 1990! I did love that instrument. So many people talk about the B-3 as being the ultimate Hammond .... I do not agree. It was one of them, but by fare the only one! I also played the new XB-3 with two Leslie 122's hooked up. What a sound!!! Of course I had to adjust certain specifications to my personal taste but the result was unbelievable. Many talk about Hammond not having a future. Some also claim that the biggest competition to the new ones are the oldies! It is hard to figure what is in the future for Hammond, but I believe that what they managed to stuff in there is having a great potential. I guess it is a question of attitude? What do you think? |

Thank you for this nice post. You are really in love with the hammond. As we are. Elisabeth plays it as I???m a guitarist, but I maintain it. We used to carry it to gigs, along with leslie and the Fender rhodes. As we do mostly studio work, we had no gigs for a few years. (No good places to play here, no money to pay a good drummer and bass player.) Now we think of putting a live band together again. But we are hesitant to take the C3 and leslie back on the stage as we don???t want to harm it. Hammonds are all around in the USA, but here in Germany they are quite rare. Keep on grrooovin??? I do assume you mean XB-2 - and of those manuals I have plenty. We did unpack the original English versions, and put in some national once, I made by the way. Of course I kept the originals, so no problem.

Hey Hammond brothers & sisters,I (and 2 other people!) carried 2 C3s and a 145 and a142 down into my cellar 18 months ago and that is where they are staying! They sound different from each other. One was bought originally for spares and became a "project" and has been rebuilt and broken manual resistance wires repaired (see the files section on this list's web site on yahoogroups). I know it seems mad having 2 C3s but I can't bear departing with either!! The sound of a REAL Hammond through a Leslie is just incredible. I first got turned on to it in 72 aftwer hearing Keith Emerson and ELP. Since then I've become a Hammond addict and listen to many different musicians ranging from Keith to Barbara Dennerlein, JTQ (the business!!) Jimmy Smith Reuben Wilson etc etc. A clone will NEVER match the real thing. -- David Bentley |
