Re: [hammond_zone] two schematic questions

Those types of capacitors that have the extra shielding and the third lead
are called "feed thru caps". I haven't seen alot of design with those types
lately, except for more professionally built radio equipment i.e. radio
stations where the possibilty of RF feedback may occur back into the system.

Alright boys and girls. Thought you'd like an update from your happy tonewheel man.

Review of TWG restoration project:
Purpose: To have fun and reproduce the very heart around which a tonewheel organ is built. This will not be a money-making monster, I'm fairly certain, but it can be made to at least break even. I do not have a skewed view of what the market is for this thing, so I'm not expecting the door to be blown down with sales. Hence the heavy reliance on those whose aquaintances I've made over the years to donate their time or provide services at a reduced cost. Calling in favors hasn't hurt either. The whole purpose is to "keep 'em spinnin'". While I'm not hurrying this, I'm amazed at what has been accomplished so far.

What we have:
As I bring new folks with skills on line, I'm organizing and delegating tasks. These folks are working on their respective issues as they get time and means. Here's what's lined up so far:

1) Generating coils and filter transformers to be reproduced by the folks who build the transformers for my amps. A side note on this: I am going to work with these folks to provide exact replacement and upgade transformers for our Hammonds and Leslies at a reasonable price. Stay tuned for more on this.
2) I have contacted my former mentor's family in Pittsburgh and all the TWG jigs and repair tools I used 25 years ago are on the way to me. These were donated to the cause.
3) My pattern maker friend is ready to set up his CAD program for multiple drilling of end plates, etc. This guy's a jazz nut, loves Smith and DeFrancesco. Doneted all the R & D time.
4) Another jazz nut in Albuquerque will do the laser cutting of all tonewheels, gears, etc. He is also a friend of the patternmaker, so they've already sat down to a strategy meeting. He, too, is donating his R & D time.
5) Self-starting syncronous motors at a variety of RPMs for both the US and UK market have been sourced. Later on we'll see what's the best fit. All of us have agreed that this would be the best way to go, as opposed to fitting seperate start and run motors. However, the pattern maker suggested that we leave the original Hammond mount pattern in place for both motors, the idea being that we could offer the TWG without motors/scanner for those who have good ones.
6) I've initiated a patent search to see what the current status of the TWG patent(s) is/are at present, but I haven't made much progress, as I'm not very good at this. The thing is, it's important to ascertain the staus of the patents before too much effort is put into this. Moving this up to the front burner. Anyone have any ideas as to how to be sure the TWG patents are dead?

Now, zoners, what all my folks are yelling for now is a defunct TWG to disect. Do any of you have a dead TWG laying around you'd like to donate to the cause? Email me if you do. It does NOT have to work.

Regular updates of this project will be forwarded to the Zone.

Raul

It really might be fun to make tone-wheel systems, but it would seem that it should be a business with the
members as stockholders. Whatever, there will come some "ownership." Because there are potentially
more who would be interested, it is adviseable to create a corporation. It is not too expensive to do this in Florida.
It is a "corporate friendly" state. I don't see why the entire system could not be laser driven in its basic design.

The wheels are machined as are the gears, brass hubs and steel
shafts.The
bakelite gears look to be pressed or stamped, but may also be machined for
concentricity. The dividers are stamped out in one piece as are the horizontal
supports
with all the alignment nitches.the bushings are Oillite Bronze and are turned
parts.
All can be duplicated with the right tooling but the cost would be up
there.
Would it be worth it?HECK YES! Please respond Imight be interested in

all done!

Carlo Pietroniro

well, the Leslie is hooked up, and all is working great! He installed the two half-moon switches in their usual place. (main, ensemble, echo) and (chorale, tremolo). When it's set to 'main', the G-100's speakers sound (4 original cabinets). When it's set to 'echo', just the Leslie PLUS the pedal cabinet (for the pedal stops). When it's set to 'ensemble', everything sounds. He said because of the nature of the pedal stops, he configured the G-100 pedal cabinet to sound when set on 'echo' because the pedal tones don't always sound good when they're passed through a Leslie, since the G-100 is more of a 'classical' organ than a traditional Hammond. While he was here, he gave the organ a complete check-up. He said he's never seen a G-100 in such good shape. he was very impressed. So much so, that he offered me $10,000 for the entire set-up. There's one other G-100 here in Montreal (in a church), and he services that one too, but there are a few things that no longer work on it. Mine is in mint condition, and everything works. It plays like it just rolled off the assembly line.

Re: [hammond_zone] Re: Leslie 122 won't slow down

Hey Nick,
I'd check that tube j.r. was talking about. I had the same problem
and just jiggling the tube fixed her up. Local tech wanted big bucks to "see
what he could do." I'm sure he would have known and done what I did then hand
me an outrageous bill while wiping the sweat from his brow... "Tough job.
Almost had to call in my assistant, but after a couple of hours I was able to
get her running again. That'll be a million dollars please...Oh and here's
the parts list I needed." Honest Tech-less in San Diego

right now, as I write this, the organ technician is hooking up my Leslie 147 to my G-100. I'll let you know how it turns out.

shafts.

Re: [hammond_zone] Re: Tonewheel generators

The alum. was just an idea, wear should not be a problem the shafts are
spun in
bushings pressed into the end plates.Nonmagnetism might stop sme of the
crosstalk
in the generator.I was under the impression the field was created by the
tuned coils
inside.Could be wrong though. It might change the overall sound to much.

the 926? To be honest, I have no idea what model I'm playing, when I'm playing it. I don't play them very often really. Describe the 926, and I'll tell you if I've played one before.

Re: [hammond_zone] valves

Chris Clifton

Some ten years ago I replaced all the valves in an L-100 for a church. The
organ was louder and sounding better afterwards. The valves that take the
heaviest use are the power output valves 6BQ5/EL84 and the 5U4G rectifier,
so if you only want to replace some valves and save cost these would be the
ones to go for.

Hi,

I went to take a look to the valves in my L100 today. Whit help of the age
determinationlist is was able to find out that the organ as well as all the
tubes were manufactured in 1971. All the tubes are original. This means they
are +30 years old. I've always herd that valves need to be replaced about
every 2-3v years. So maybe this will be a good moment to change my valves!
But will the sound differ from the current sound(How?) And which tubes MUST
be replaced and which NOT necesserily?
I read a million time not to take the chinise tubes so I won't take them!

Re: [hammond_zone] two schematic questions

Chris Clifton

Doug,
I guess you mean an internal wiring diagram of the AO-28? I've just had a
look in my A-100 service manual, there is no wiring diagram, looks as if you
are expected to work it out from the schematics! There is a wiring diagram
for the organ, showing how all the various boxes connect together.

(1) I've found several copies of the AO-28 schematic on the net, but I
haven't run into any copies of the AO-28 wiring diagram. I checked the
Hammond FAQ, Captain Foldback's site, and Hammond Zone. Did I miss it ? Is
there such a critter out there? It would be helpful for rebuilding my
AO-28.

(2) Not having a Hammond in front of me, it makes sense that the vibrato
line
caps are non-polarized, in spite of the curved+straight plate on the
schematic... Hammond schematics don't seem to be consistent even in
marking
power supply filter cap + sides (although it's obvious from the circuits)
and
when I learned electronics, one used parallel plates for non-polarized
caps.

Am I right ?

Doug
