Keying interface 14
Hi all, Since I'm now retired I have time to goof off. I was trying to design an amplifier keying interface using an optocoupler. I don't need one since I already built a few using BJT's and/or darlingtons so this is just killing time on a rainy day. I have an MCT61. I haven't been able to figure out the datasheet since it seems to list things in a different way. The datasheet is probably fine, it's just I have virtually no experience with optocouplers. So using the DATA DIN on the back of my 850 and 870 I need to keep the current draw on that DIN under 10 mA so my target is 6 mA. I made a voltage divider to keep the voltage down to the opto and also keep the current down on the radio's 12 volt supply. I did hit my target of 6 mA and also I measured 6 mA on the diode side of the opto but on the transistor side of the opto I measured 85 ohms from C to E when turned on so I feel the opto was not completely turning on the transistor side. I was hoping to see zero ohms when turned on, not 85 or so. What I was going to do next is use a regular switching BJT driven by the transistor side of the opto to do the amplifier keying/switching. I haven't got to that part of this experiment yet but my gut feeling is I don't have the correct optocoupler for this project. Again I need to keep the current draw on the Kenwood radio's DIN plug at 6mA so my thinking is I need an opto that will completely saturate the transistor side with 6mA current on the diode side and it doesn't look like what I have can do that. Again, this is just for fun but if I'm successful I'll make one for my amps. Am I on the right track? Thanks for reading. Bob W4JFA

KD9SV Ft. End Protectr
Years ago Gary made a relay-driven protector when it was seen that a large RF signal could damage the circuitry of the transceiver¡¯s RX2 port. It turned out to be an excellent RF amplifier keying driver as the high quality of the driver relay provided a worthwhile isolation. There are a number of available products these days, I hear. Like I.C.E. Products, the KD9SV stamp is to investigate. Hal W4HBM

GG Amplifiers Bias Cut Off 28
In older commercial grounded grid amplifiers, it is common to see a cahngeover relay used to switch between a zener diode or similar bias regulator and a bias cut off resistor. My question is, why did they do it like that? To me, it is bad engineering, in that during the change of state between transmit and receive, there is a short period where there is neither cut off nor idle current bias applied. OK, it is a very short period but it happens. In my view, it is surely better to have the bias cut off resistor permanently in series with the bias regulator and simply have the relay contact short the resistor when the amplifier is keyed. That way, that small period of open circuit bias can never occur. Why couldn't the designers of these old amps see the simplicity and sense of doing this? 73, Alek VK6APK.

Need Help with Amp Supply LK500ZC 38
Hi Everone, I've owned this amp about 5 years but used very little. The amp was refurbished (new tubes, and relays) by a guy in north Idaho about 2017, just before I bought it. I have tried to contact him but get no response. A couple weeks ago in the middle of a QSO I sensed some unusual heat from the amp and noticed the tubes were both cherry red. I shut it down immediately. I have tuned it up a couple times since and the symptoms reoccur. I am (obviously) not an amp guy or much of a technician so I have 2 questions. 1. Is this a symptom of something that might be easily confirmed and repaired by me, and if not 2. Is there anyone in the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver BC area I might take it to for repair? Thanks for any help or ideas John W7SWB Does

AL-80B Transformer Solution now that Ameritron is closing? 5
I have a transformer company that might be able to assist. Does anyone know the exact spec of the Ameritron AL-80B power transformer? I'm assuming secondaries are 9VAC @ 1.5A, 3.53VAC @ 15A, and 1100VAC @ .6A I have dug through the manuals and can't find anything specific. You can see the voltage doubler in the schematic though. And if 3100 No load volts is the DC target for B+? Thanks! Warren (WR0S)

TL-922 tube filament voltage. 17
Hi All, I've appreciated all the info that I've gotten on the Kenwood TL-922A and I've ordered the relay switching board from Harbach. While I'm in there, I'd like to address the filament voltage. I've looked for info on how I might do that, but I'm not finding what I want. Is there an easy way to do this that has been done and I can get the docs on?? Any info would be appreciated. BTW, I've had my electrical service here upgraded and my line voltage here measures around 250 VAC. So that filament voltage SHOULD be addressed. Thanks!! -- Kim Herron W8ZV w8zv@...

Tube socket for 3CX1500A7 tube-socket broken 14
Sorry to be a pest guys!! I've become the proud owner of a Dentron DTR-2000L amp with a broken tube socket and a missing cooling fan. This came from an estate and I'm sure that the SK was not using this amp. I could use a suggestion on a fan, as I understand that the muffin fan was NOT a good choice for a fan. The other question is if any one here has had experience with the Chinese sockets on E-Bay. Here's the auction number. 184967626094. $38.50 a great price, if the thing is any good. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!!! -- Kim Herron W8ZV w8zv@...

HV Wire 19
Since we seem to have some options for proper HV connectors, what about wire? My amp has a separate power supply and the interconnect cable it came with is not the original, and I highly suspect it's not up to safely delivering ~3kV. I anticipated coming up with a bundle (11 conductors as I recall) plus HV and grounded shield that used some kind of silicone wire for B+ and teflon for the rest but haven't done any research on this yet. What would be the prevailing wisdom for ~6ft of B+ cable? Separately shielded within the bundle? Extra isolation between wires with sheathing? I have NO IDEA what best practice is for this configuration and no real world example to follow. Mark K5LXP Albuquerque, NM

FL-2100Z Mods 15
A local ham dropped in a Yaesu FL-2100Z amp tp me and said that he would like all the PA0FRI mods done to it. See http://www.pa0fri.com/ This is no big problem, as most of the mods are common sense and they are what one would normally do to an amp. However, there is one mod that strikes me as odd. He suggests cutting the grounding wires on VC1, the plate tune capacitor, and running a thick wire or coax from the cold side of VC1 to a ground point at the base of one of the 572B sockets. This seems very odd to me. I don't see how this would enhance stability, having that grounding wire running all that way. Every amp I have seen or built, has the cold end of the capacitor bonded to the nearest point on the chassis. Should one be doing this mod? My feeling is that it should be left alone. Opinions appreciated. Thanks, Alek. Dentron Clipperton L 6
Hello, I currently have a Dentron clipperton L that I have been tinkering with and I know that some of the last models had a tuned input that came with the amp. I¡¯m looking for a manual/schematic for this as I¡¯m wanting to build one to put in the amp. I have a CM-1 but just trying to eliminate some cabling. Here are some pictures of the cleanup/restoration.

Need advice on HV connectors 38
HI all, Thanks for reading the mail. I have acquired a home brew amp and power supply that is missing its HV cable. I'd like to change both of them to one style since they are both different. Jack Schutt K9GT originally built this. I'd thought about using SO-239/PL-259's that are Teflon with RG-8 inner conductor cable as the HV wire and packing the PL-259's with RTV-108 and sleeving the wire with GOOD Belden heavy shrink tube with sealant. Does that sound like it would hold 5 KV since that's what Jack built the power supply too? Thanks for the input and reading the mail. Kim Herron W8ZV w8zv@... www.goldenradioservice.com 616-677-3706

Amp Supply LK800 Meter/ALO Board Question 14
All- I have an Amp Supply Company LK800A amplifier that puts out full power. However, I noticed recently that it shows no grid current reading when transmitting on multiple bands. This is odd behavior, as the grid current normally runs ca. 20-50 mA from my past experience. I know the meter is fine, because when I turn the meter switch to measure plate voltage, I get the expected reading. I looked at the meter/ALO board and found that R29 was somewhat charred and had a reading of 180 K ohms. No other parts look visibly damaged. The LK-800 series manual does not have a schematic for this board. I was able to find one at http://www.radiomanual.info/schemi/ACC_PA/Amp_Supply_LK-400_LK-500_series_user_1988.pdf. While the manual is for the LK-400 / LK-500 series, it does have a description of the ALO/Meter board. The resistor R29 is in the grid current metering circuit and is claimed to have a value of 18 ohms (p. 27 and 29). I suspect this is the problem. The other parts on my board seem to match what is listed on p. 29, and the parts list on p. 29 suggests the board works in the LK-800 series amps because it references the heavy resistor R30 as being unique to the LK-800 (and is present on my board). My question - can someone verify that R29 should indeed be 18 ohms? I would hate for there to be a misprint in the manual and find my grid current meter to be blown when I try this out, as I suspect they are very difficult to obtain. Also, do you have any insights as to what would blow this resistor? A current of 120 mA through that resistor would deliver 0.25 watts... I have always kept the grid current low, but I did loan the amplifier out a few years ago and don't know if the other user experienced an issue. Many thanks, -Mark

Help Identifying Peter Dahl ALS4T Custom transformer specs 8
Greetings to the Group, I bought a Peter Dahl transformer for use in a 1296 MHz tube amp using 2C39/7289's. The P/N on the transformer is ALS4T and the serial number is 06/14/01. Albeit a custom transformer (as I believe most were), I recall this being in his catalog. However, the ones that I can find (mid 2000's from Harbaugh) do not have it. Might someone in the group have something earlier than this that might have it in the price description pages? Modest in size, it is a hypersil design with a 110/220v primary, 6.3v filament, and a HV with C.T. I'm trying to figure out the HV secondary ratings. Peter Dahl P/N ALS4T. Thanks in advance. 73, Mike K9MK
