Thanks for the advice. Ok, I understand the issue can be stray capacitance and inductance?

I see this project happening in stages, eg build with what I have and some extra pieces to prove the concept and learn. Then refine the build and make tidy, using more suitable components etc.? Never make the prototype the final example is my thinking.
