My arduino uno clone uses CH340 ftdi chip.? Does this cause problems with your app???? It works fine with Arduino IDE.? Which serial option should I use for USB connection to arduino? I get error L70 = 70438? object not supported ..... Demands that I update arduino app for sdrshield.? Have done so, but have to use xloader. appears to stay running after cancelling these messages, but no sign on screen that a signal is being seen. Help! / thanks

Hi
Welcome to the group :-)
My Arduino UNO also uses a CH340 USB to TTL Serial chip - typical of cheap chinese clones - and I have never had a problem. Since your UNO works correctly with the Arduino IDE it should work fine with the G8JCFSDR.
Also I don't recognise the error message you describe. Could U please run the G8JCFSDR in TRACE mode and email me the logfile to help me understand what is going on ?
In G8JCFSDR, U need to select the Serial I/F tab under config, and then select the correct COM port, set baudrate to 115200, 8 data, 1 stop, no parity.
A really simple way to test the connection is to launch a terminal emulator, eg Tera Term, PUTTY, and connect to the UNO using a serial connection. Typing V<enter> into the terminal emulator should result in a response of 1.2 or 1.3 depending on which build of G8JCFSDR you have installed. If U can't make a connection into your UNO from the terminal emulator, then something very strange is going on, eg incorrect COM port, another program has the COM port opened already.
Please let us know how you go.

Thank you.? My "duhh" moment came with switching to "serial" port.? Runs fine now, but still no sign of signal on display. Also, how do I start in TRACE mode? Also, on an older PC running XP, I haven't been able to get past an error message about audio driver missing...

Good News :-)
If U have installed build 280 or 281, your start menu should contain an entry for "G8JCFSDR Trace Mode".
The G8JCFSDR was developed back in 2003, initially under W95 on a 333MHz Celeron with 64MBytes (yes megabytes!!) of RAM, and I still run the G8JCFSDR up on a VM running XP to check compatibility.
Anyway, re the missing audio driver, does the XP PC have the correct audio driver(s) installed ? The G8JCFSDR uses DirectX for AF in/output, so run DxDiag.exe and see what it says about your Sound driver(s). If DxDiag report NO Problems with your sound drivers then it should all work properly, if DxDiag finds a problem, U will have to figure out what to do to rectify the problem(s).
To make sure that your Elektor SDR Shield is working correctly, U should download Christian Zeitnitz's really excellent soundcard Scope program from and use the scope program to see what sort of signals are being sent into your soundcard. To eiliminate any problems which may be caused by the G8JCFSDR, U can manually tune the SDR shield using a terminal emulator such as Putty or TeraTerm. The command to set the frequency in the SDR Shield is f nnnnn<CrLf> where nnnnn is the frequency in Hz, so for example to tune BBC R4 here in the UK on 198KHz, one types
f 198000<Enter>? //Make sure to set your Terminal Emulator to send CrLF for line endings
In the Scope program use the Frequency Tab to get a Spectrum Display.
Hopefully these tips will get U on your way, please let us know how it goes.

I assume that U have run the G8JCFSDR installer, which would then create a Start Menu entry G8JCF under which U will find G8JCFSDR and under that U will find lots of shortcuts, See above Peter - GM8JCF
|
I have to append /trace to get it.? As an exe it doesn't exist here.? I did use the install package.

So the G8JCFSDr Trace Mode Start-Menu shortcut isn't "C:\Program Files (x86)\G8JCF\G8JCFSDR\G8JCFSDR.exe" /trace" ?

Scope shows essentially nothing, very, very low level random noise.

The log file looks OK.
What did DXDiag.exe report about your sound card/driver ?

That's good news. So DirectX is all working correctly, could U please do "Save All Information" in DXDiag.exe and send the dxdiag.txt file to me ?
What about the Scope program, did that show any sign of life in Frequency tab ?
The check the fuse question, have U selected the correct AF I/F in device on the Soundcard tab in config ?

Have tried all soundcard options, no change on screen, no audio signal at jack, pre-IF unresponsive to antenna yes/no, no change on any display on program or scope, when antenna attached detached. I'lve just orderes some FETs for the front end, which may be blown, though never connected to an outside antenna or anything that would get a transient past the input diodes.? I'll try some more troubleshooting, thank you for your help,

The SDR shield UNO has a 16MHz oscillator, so WITHOUT an aerial, try tuning to 16 MHz ish and see if U can see a small spur. Also because U are running 1.0.281, U can go into Config, General Tab, Click Calibrate Elektor SDR Shield Tune to around 14MHz, and click ON for IQ Cal Freq, which should produce a carrier 1KHz above from where U are tuned. If U have a V2 SDR Shield, then a wire from CLK0 output will give U a much stronger signal which U will be able to see even down at MW frequencies Peter - GM8JCf
