Hello Trevor, I very much enjoyed coming along last night and meeting many of the MYARS members, and I appreciated the thought you had all put into your questions, which fitted well with many of the areas I have seen to be of interest or concern to amateurs. I am sorry that time overran and apologise if this caused anyone difficulties, but I was pleased to have the open discussion and sharing of ideas which I feel was very positive. I will be following up on the points I took away and will get back over the coming days with a response to these, which you can then share with the members. If their are any issues that come up anytime that members or the club want to share then please let me know and I will try to assist. Thanks to all for a very enjoyable evening and I will drop in again later this year for a less formal meeting with the members. Best 73 to all at MYARS Keith

From: Geoff Harris Sent: Sunday, March 04, 2012 8:24 PM To: geoffrey.harris@... Subject: Fw: Membership for 2012 Dear members, This is an important message from your favourite Treasurer; our annual subscription fee is now due for this year, and I would be very grateful if those who have not yet paid could please do so within the next 2 weeks – it’s only ?10 - I noticed at the BRATT’S rally last Sunday that their membership is ?35!! So far we have 24 members who have paid, which is good, so thank you to those concerned. I will not be at the club this Monday, but if you wish you can give your money to Brian 2E0LAH, who will kindly record it and hand it to me the following week at the junk sale! Keith 2E0KJA has very kindly offered to encapsulate the membership cards, so I would naturally rather he could do them all in one go; thanks for this Keith – much appreciated! ONLY ?10, ONLY ?10, ONLY ?10..........!! Blimey, the coffee’s worth more than (so Brian keeps telling me!) 73’s Geoff G7NJB

> Sent: The Club Has always Previously welcomed Children as members but insisted that they have a parent or guardian with them. Hi Goeff, as i was a member of this club at age 12, i am biased! I was allways made welcome at that age and not thrown out untill at the age of 22 i did a thing for which i could not be forgiven.... I aquired a B LICENSE (I still have it)!!!!! Despite this i feel compelled to offer the same oppertunity to others that was offered to me, and if i don't i will feel a fraud! I feel that this will have to be put to the membership, and if they decide then i will stand by them. If they decide that youth are not welcome I will feel that they have changed the spirit of the club, but that is their right! I hope i do not offend too many people with this attitude, this is not something i am doing to annoy people ( i save that for Ian Hope & Terry), it is just that i wil allways feel that you should do unto others as you would expect them to do to you (unless they are bankers, Planning Officers or MPs). Enough ranting, over to the membership! Trevor G6ALJ (B License, upgraded without consultation). Thoughts as a member not Chairman. 03/04/12 09:32 PM > To: Trevor Collins, hvicary@..., Keith Anderson > Subject: Minimum age for club membership. > > Dear Trevor, Howard and Keith, > > Following on from what Trevor mentioned last week about allowing a 6 & 12-year old into the club, we need a decision about this quite quickly. I am uncertain if we have a minimum age in our constitution, in which case this will be self-evident, but if not then we need to sort this out now. > > Personally speaking, given today's difficult situation regarding child-protection, and bearing in mind that apart from Helen, Ian's XYL (of sorts), we are a bunch of mainly retired-elderly grumpy old men, and I think it will be dangerous to allow kids of that age into the hut. Not only that, but many of the members might stop coming if the hut becomes a child-minders every Friday night; we are not the Cubs or the Scouts, and I feel we should stipulate a minimum age of 16. If we can't reach agreement, then we should ask the members – I think they would not want children around any more than I do. > I have enhanced CRB disclosure for my church duties, but I try not to get involved with youngsters of that age unless I really need to, and even then I make sure I'm never alone; we live in different times to our past, and I think it's hassle we could do without. The MARTS do take 16 year-olds, but they insist they always have one of their parents with them, and we must do the same for the sake of everyone at the club. > > Can you reply ASAP please; we need agreement on this before they suddenly turn up one evening. Keith DRM said he thought that 6 was far too young for many reasons, but we could possibly accept the 12 year-old if we felt happy as a group, but ideally they should be a little older. > > 73 > > Geoff >

FW: MAIDSTONE Y ARS DRM ACTIONS
To: hvicary@... Subject: MAIDSTONE Y ARS DRM ACTIONS From: keithlbird@... Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2012 06:30:13 -0500 Hello Howard, thanks for the warm welcome by club members at the meeting last Monday, I am sorry we over ran but I wanted to be sure and cover all questions that were raised. I did exchange emails with Trevor last Monday, and I trust he has conveyed my thanks to members already. I did indeed take away a number of points that I have started to work on, but if you or the members see anything missed off or want to follow-up in the meantime do please let me know. The points I have to work on are; RSGB Membership. Keith 2E0KJA, recounted receiving a welcome letter from the RSGB containing details of setting up a Foundation licensee’s station, but that the document contained errors. Is this letter still sent out? Training and exams. It was reported that MYARS is not listed on the RSGB website under training clubs. Current listing to be checked, and to confirm with club they have received logon account for updating this information. The club appears not to have ported their information across onto the new RSGB webpage. Account login details were sent to '22, Plains Ave', late last year. An email is being sent from HQ to Howard with the login details for updating the required information. Action closed. Club activity. The members discussed their contest activity last year, shared with other clubs at Capel-le-Firth. Question raised over RSGB insurance cover for non members attending such events. To confirm the extent of insurance cover. Public liability is that for 3rd parties, the RSGB insurance has an extension that covers member to member liability also. Action closed. It was stated that during the 2011 VHF NFD, the station G5LK deliberately interfered with the Maidstone clubs signal by transmitting carriers, because they were using the same locator, correctly. To confirm whether it was reported to the contest adjudicator. OFCOM licensing. Urwin raised the matter of licence revalidation, which he said was confusing on the OFCOM website and appeared not to be working. To confirm if this is a general issue. Band interference. Some members living near to Kent Police HQ in Sutton Rd, Maidstone, reported that broad based interference appears to emanate from their communications centre, and can radiate onto 11m and 2m. Self to raise with EMC coordinator for comment. Email sent to EMC coordinator asking for any information of known cases around such environments, and specific information required to trace and identify these signals. Planning control. Discussion led into suggesting a working party / local club to enter discussions with councils to draft a planning application template, aligned to approved planning consent. Reference was made to believed blanket approval for CB and satellite installations in Suffolk. Does such approval exist? Email sent to Suffolk DRM for information about potential approvals that might help amateurs.

How Radio waves are Produced
Today there is a video posted on the Southgate News Forum which seeks to convince us that radio waves are Magnetic in nature & NOT Electromagnetic as we generally accept. Hmmmm - I shall be interested to hear anybody else s views after watching it. A good subject for the Club Net ?. Ian G4UAQ.

INFORMATION ABOUT BAND RESTRICTIONS DURING THE OLYMPICS
Begin forwarded message: From: "keithlbird@..." <keithlbird@...> Subject: Fwd: INFORMATION ABOUT BAND RESTRICTIONS DURING THE OLYMPICS Date: 6 April 2012 10:27:46 GMT+01:00 Dear club contact, Below is a short brief regarding amateur operating during the Olympics. Though some information is doing the rounds, the acting GM reports this is still to be finalised within OFCOM, before it is released formally via the web. Amateur band restrictions during the Olympic & Paralympics Games The RSGB attended a meeting on 5th April at Ofcom for a briefing on Ofcom’s spectrum management proposals for the amateur services that cover the period 28th June to 23rd September 2012. The proposals have yet to receive final drafting revision and approval within Ofcom, before publication on their website. The Society will augment this publicity to help ensure that members are aware of the limitations and the importance of restricting our operating during the Olympic period. Unfortunately, some of the current draft has become more widely circulated than was intended during the process of internal consultation. It contains some information that may not be included in the final version. Members are asked to await the formal announcement from Ofcom. The Society will be preparing a full coverage of the restrictions that cover 70 cm and the two lower microwave bands. This will include the concessions, still being worked upon, for contests during this period. 73 Keith - G4JED RSGB Region 12 DRM - Kent

Update: Olympics 70cm restrictions

Begin forwarded message: From: "keithlbird@..." <keithlbird@...> Subject: Update: Olympics 70cm restrictions Date: 25 April 2012 21:02:53 GMT+01:00 Dear club contacts, the following email relates to a consultation document that Ofcom have released, referring to proposed new regulation for control of interference during the Olympics. You may find the document of interest and even wish to comment. 73 Keith - G4JED RSGB Region 12 DRM - Kent CQ All Further to my recent email regarding 70cm restrictions during the run up to, the actual Olympics, and the following mop up period, Ofcom have today announced an extra new draft Criminal Prosecution Regulations with Protection radii around event zones. See http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/undueinterference-olympics-2012/ssummary It is imperative that all Radio Amateurs using 70cm Band are fully conversed with these new regulations. You are advised to download the "Full Print Version" and read these new regulations very carefully. We can expect zero tolerance of non-compliance from Ofcom and the Authorities during the Olympics. Best Wishes Norman Crampton, M0FZW RSGB Region 12 DRM (Essex)

Mondays Examinations
Hi All, 1) The RSGB forgot to include the forms confirming completion of the practical aspects of the Foundation and Intermediate courses. 2) The forms have been emailed to me via Ian and I will process them and return them to the RSGB. 3) The knock on effect of this is that the exam results will not have been passed to Ofcom yet. This should happen within 2-3 days. 4) The RSGB have requested the 6 students do not approach Ofcom yet for their licences. 73 Howard G0RJN

Exam results

The RSGB have informed me that the 6 exam results from Mondays session were passed to Ofcom lunchtime today. Ofcom process them quite quickly, so they should be available now. Well done all 6 for passing and thanks to Ian and Trevor for invigilating so well. Let us know the new callsigns asap. I hope to hear you all on the air soon! 73 Howard G0RJN

RSGB General Manager
Begin forwarded message: From: "GB2RS" <ungb2rs@...> Subject: RSGB General Manager Date: 16 May 2012 14:56:28 GMT+01:00 To: info@... RSGB General Manager In November last year we informed our membership of the financial and organisational challenges that faced the RSGB and presented our vision for the future of the Society. Your Board has been working on developing that strategy and is in the process of building financial, operational and governance models in preparation for consultation with staff, volunteers and members. One clear conclusion from our work is that we will need strong, dedicated leadership for the operational activities of the Society and I am pleased to announce that Graham Coomber, G0NBI has been appointed as General Manager of the Radio Society of Great Britain. Graham’s role will be to work with the Board to develop and implement the strategic vision and the changes needed to create a financially sound, membership responsive, Society. Graham, who holds an MBA from the London Business School, joins us from a successful career at senior levels in Healthcare Management, including as CEO of several Health Authorities, and in consultancy assignments in South Africa. He brings experience of senior general management roles, strategic planning and transformational change. Graham is an active radio amateur, with interests in both the DX and contesting arenas. He has also worked for RAIBC and has an interest in WAB. He also holds the call SV0XBA. Commenting on his appointment Graham said “I am particularly pleased to be joining the Society at a time of significant change. My career has included periods of transformational change and it is at times like this that a real contribution to shaping the future can be made. I look forward to working with the staff and volunteers to confirm the RSGB as a leading light both nationally and globally in the world of Amateur Radio”. Graham takes up his appointment immediately and will initially be undergoing a short period of induction. He will work with the previous Acting General Manager, Don Beattie, G3BJ, to ensure a progressive and smooth hand over of responsibilities. I should like to put on record the Society’s enormous gratitude to Don, G3BJ for ‘holding the reins’ for the past 14 months. Dave Wilson, President.
